TD5 Oil Change question

Do you think? I have read many times that 3000 mile changes prolong the life of older engines.

I'm sure some will disagree but it's down to personal opinion at the end of the day.
If you're just doing 3k miles a year and as part of it's yearly service fair enough,
But if your doing 10k a year I wouldn't be changing it 3 times a year.

The LR service interval for the TD5 IIRC is 12k, bear in mind they have 2 oil filters too.
I would be looking at doing it around the 10k miles whilst changing both filters :)

not the same engine but i change the oil on my 250 benly every 2000 miles. it only holds 1 1/2 litres of the cheapest oil i can get and its coming up to 130,000 miles with out any engine work.
so yeh, what ever your happy with:)

Oil-change frequency depends a lot on what work you are doing with the vehicle.

If you are using it as a car, on-road and under 'normal' conditions you might change your oil every 6000mls or 6 months.

If you work in a quarry or a desert or anywhere where there's loads of dust and mud, you might decide to change your oil more often.

It really depends on the environment in which you are operating.

Use quality oil though ;)

I use the Disco for towing a caravan in the summer and thought fresh oil would be good for the winter months when it just has cold starts to contend with. My mate works for a Jag/LR spares distributor so I can get the filters and oil for less than £30 + vat.

So I'm changing the oil every 3000 miles. Is it necessary to change the filters at the same time?

Bit excessive really.

By today's standards even a 5k oil change seems excessive.

Oil has come a long way, although I do not condone these long service intervals, I tend to change at about 5/6k I think anything less is probably quite wasteful.

If you are using a decent oil and you have only done 3000 miles before winter approaches, I would do the winter on the same oil and change it in spring.

If you are oil-changing due to the expected lower temps, you would be well advised to re-fill with a 5w-30 engine oil to ACEA B1 spec.

It'll help with low-temp starts.

I like these oil threads they are common but you do learn abit from them. I service my Range Rover every 3000 miles or as near to. And only use Genuine filters.

The only "harm" is that it's wasteful.

I do mine every year or 10-12k, (usually about the same thing). I can understand some doing every 6 months/6k, it certainly doesnt hurt. But every 3k is borderline "silly"!

I think you are right about that, gentle car type use you could go to 6k, myself I change the oil and filter every 3k, but a lot of my usage is off road and very slow, so maybe the hours are more relevant.

Well it will be 6 months since last done, oil in my engine goes black after a couple of hundred miles.

As will all diesel engine oil.

The TD5 centrifugal filter is brilliant and really does a great job so the oil is actually very clean.

We did tests on TD5 oil years ago on a near 100k mile vehicle, oil was a year old and had about 10k on it, after we did various tests and cleanliness checks and breakdown tests we felt it was such a waste we had just dumped 6 odd litres of oil that was still good. It was super universal tractor oil.

Very interesting to read all the comments on this thread. I think I'll store the oil and filters and do the changeover next spring. I've been won over by the reasoned opinions offered.
Thanks guys.

I think genuine filters are too expensive, and a complete waste of money. No offence mate...:)
