Despite the howling gale, and then rain :( I've managed to remove the injector rocker shaft, then the injectors ready to fit new rings/seals. The only thing I couldn't do was to remove the fan, presumably in order to make it easier to turn the engine over. Unfortunately the fan nut wont budge no matter what . I've managed to turn the engine on the belt just enough to allow the injectors to clear the cam shaft. The problem will arise when I need to turn the engine to line up TDC and refit the injectors. Anyone had a similar issue? and if so how did you get round it? thanks :)

If the car has a manual gearbox, jack the drivers side front wheel just clear of the ground.Engage fifth gear then use your foot to turn the front wheel - this will turn the engine exactly where you want it to be.You dont need to get TDC,just get the lobes of the cam out of the way to remove/refit the injectors.

Yep, I just rocked mine in gear with the handbrake off, though putting more tension by hand on the fan belt and turning the fan did move it some.

Hi can anyone help i have a 2000 td5 defender had the fuel pump replaced it wont start when cold once started blows loads of smoke out im now having the injector seals/washers replaced, once the rocker cover was off the (injector adjuster) had wound its self off could anyone tell me would that be the starting problems new to all this only had the defender for 2 weeks and sick of it already.john

if u still have it on then check the EGR valve, it could be clogged with exhaust sh*t.....wont hurt to plug in a scanner......also the defender has the oil in harness problem too

It could well be your glow plugs, hence poor starting when cold.

I am relatively new to the TD5 also, but if you were to post your query in a new thread, I reckon you will get help a bit quicker 'coz your post is a little buried in this thread.

Try to give a very full description of the problem and symtoms.

What colour is the smoke, why did you have the pump replaced, was it ok before the new pump, do you wait until the glow plug warning light goes out, did you reset the rockers etc. etc.

The better the description, the more helpful the answers will be, rather than simple wild guesses at possibilities.

Only two weeks and fed up with it?
I personally persevered with a problem mine had which made it cut out for no apparent reason more or less at random, then it wouold not start for about two days each time. It took me four months to solve it, should have been less, but I wanted to get to know my TD5 so I went the long route and did things one at a time.

With a viscous coupling fan, how could turning the fan blades turn the engine? Sounds like a good trick to me.
