TD5 MAF redundant - how to?

Hi Sierrafery! (PM notified)

I recently read a note you made on making the MAF redundant by feeding the ECU with a throttle sensor voltage signal. Do you experience any kind of delay/latency related to this setup? E.g resulting in over/under fuelling?

Theoretically there should be a timing difference between the throttle signal and MAF signal which could change the fuelling pattern ..

yes but the delay is eventually for the MAF input after the throttle on the original setup as the MAF starts to send growing readings after the revs are climbing on throttle request if you see what i mean...this way the delay is completely erased as both inputs are at the same time, as long as the MAF inputs are between 1 and 5 V growing with revs there will be no running/fueling issue, the MAF is 90% there for EGR controll.... as i said as long as the EGR is removed this mod works brilliant without any problems

However I am still a bit puzzled. Let's say the throttle is pushed down to provide a 3.0 volt signal. If in the fifth gear and pulling from low speed, it will take a while until the revs are up - even if the throttle signal is 3.0 volt. As the revs are slow to climb the MAF signal should also be lower (standard configuration).

With a linked signal (throttle = MAF) the ECU is reading too high an airflow compared to the actual revs..? Would this not lead to over-fuelling or some other 'problem' ?

the MAF has nothing to do with fueling, on a Td5 it's mainly for EGR controll... it can mix up a bit the management if it has a resistance drop or short circuit cos it puts load on the wastegate modulator's circuit too cos it's on the same... as long as the MAF inputs are between 1 and 5V everything works fine regardless of the delay between it's reading and the throttle input as long as the EGR is removed

out of interest what happens if the EGR is not removed? does it cause any power problems? as its is mine hasent been removed yet ( due to funds mainly ) and have a slight power loss

much better than before the mod though still !

it could cause some consumption issues and open the EGR sooner than it was conceived which might make it sluggish...you dont need funds to disable the EGR... clean the valve inside to not be clogged with muck, disconnect the EGR valve and clog the vacuum pipe well with a rivet or something...if it's Eu3 modell disconnect the ILT valve too and clog that pipe as well(you dont have to loose vacuum there)...then the EGR is like bypassed...clean the MAP sensor too in this case

saves paying 100odd quid for a new MAF sensor which will fail again soon anyway , its quite hit and miss with new sensors so this just gets rid of it completely

have now done as advised but shes still sluggish , feels not quite right still , sometimes it goes like stink and other times not so much

was wondering along the lines of a blocked CAT or perhaps injector washers/seals or maybe fuel pump

its not slow as it is but just dosent feel like its putting out full punch

did you clean the MAP? ... for that intermittent sluggishness there's some other reason IMO, if it was due to this mod it would be permannent...some live data readings would help

nah not blaming the mod , this problem was before the mod

the mod has helped

I did clean the MAP and id also cleaned it a few weeks ago , is it worth a straight replacement?

how would I get live data readings?

live data with a nanocom... air and fuel filters are new?...and what about oil in the ECU red plug or even at the upper plug(bottom of rocker cover) if there is oil replace the injector loom cos that's the trouble

must buy or borrow a nanocom they seem handy .....

just been serviced a few weeks ago by myself with all filters replaced

I also fitted a new injector loom a 2 months ago just after purchase when I had the gauges going haywire and rough running

while the plug was off I cut a bottle in half , taped it to the loom plug by rocker cover and filled it with electrical cleaner and left it there for a day or so while topping it up as it all leaked through the loom

had the plugs off the ecu when doing this of course , I check it every few weeks and no sign of the oil coming back
