The last couple of month my gear changes on my defender when stopping at lights, turning, etc have been awkward as if I have to force it into gear, not overly force but more than usual, also sometimes I have to raise the clutch up and down a few times to get it into gear..

The engine has done around 80,000 mile 2005 model TD5.

Does it sound like my clutch is on its way out or could it be something else?

Thanks

possible ,does it clear properly when stood will it go in to 1st then reverse ,does it creep forward ,weres biting point ? could easy be wear on baulk rings too ,it would be worth changing gearbox oil

I'd guess its either your clutch master cylinder or the clutch slave cylinder seals losing pressure and letting the clutch drag. When you pump the pedal it builds pressure and voila no problem. Is the clutch fluid clear? Is it dirty? When was the last time the fluid was changed?

hi drain gearbox oil remove filter check for metalic pieces ! swarf type crap is not uncomon but large pieces may need further investigation !! check breather pipe if oil looks like pink milkshake !! its common after floods !!! worth checking !! refil with good quality atf !! not comma from halfords !! good luck!!

Looking to do a fluid change on my TD5 soon and found the MTF94 and EP90 GL4 from Smith and Allen can be bought direct for a very reasonable price.

Has anyone used these before and is it a quality oil or is better to bite the bullet and buy the more expensive Land Rover branded oils?

I've just filled my R380 gearbox with Smith and Allen MTF and it made a massive difference. Part of the reason would be that the gearbox only had about a litre and a half of an unknown fluid in it. The gearchange between 1st and 2nd was a bit crunchy before and reverse was difficult after a run but all is silky smooth now.

Thanks for the reply birtanedaha, looks like i'd better get the Smith and Allen oils ordered.

Got exactly the same symptoms with mine so with any luck it should be running smooth after an fluid change.

We had this same problem on our td5 , it had done 83000 miles .... I'm no mechanic so ain't got a clue what I'm going on about ... But our mechanic said there was no hydrolic fluid in the clutch pedle bit ??? That make any sense ?

Well once he cleaned everything out and put new oil in .... It's absolutely spot on now .... And doesn't leak.
