No matter how hard I try or how long I leave things to stand the oil level on my dipstick is always about four inches above the full mark.
I have done a complete oil change and I know it has the correct amount in it cos I made sure when I refilled.
When the engine was draining I blew the dipstick tube thru with compressed air and the first time I used the stick was spot on.
Ever since then it is impossible to read the correct level no matter what I do.
Does anybody else have the same problems with a TD5?

my "guess " would be back pressure building up in the block ????

 just cut 4 inches of ya stick that should sort it :D :D

Exactly how are you checking your oil?

If you're not doing it like this:
Engine cold and on level ground
Remove dipstick and wipe clean
Replace dipstick, push all the way into the tube until it stops, then immediately remove dipstick and take your reading.

...then try that ;)

Cheers,

Changed oil and filter(s).
Added correct capacity according to hand book.
Engine cold and on level.
Dipstick wiped clean and fully replaced.
Still shows oil above full mark but not an obvious level as it differs everytime.
Running engine without dipstick no apparent back pressure ( thumb over hole etc.)
Cant see how DERV would be getting in to oil and would expect it to keep filling to capacity if that was the case.
Running out of ideas.

...but when you blew the dipstick tube through it read correctly for the first time only?

A new dipstick tube is only a few quid from paddocks... might be worth it just to rule it out.

Does it smoke (blue smoke) at full throttle?

No smoke blue black white or otherwise at full chat.
In fact very little smoke at all.
Just the odd puff of black accelerating from idle.
Does the dipstick tube come off easily? If so I'll give it a good clean just in case its got crap along the tube.
Thanks for all the suggestions - keep em coming.

  oil pump working ok   air lock

I've noticed the same in my new (to me anyway) TD5 - often difficult to read the dipstick with the new oil in. There was no sign of diesel or water in the oil, however, and it's now settled down after a few hundred miles and reads just fine when cool and on flat ground.

No idea on a TD5, the Tdi one is a 'snap'... can't imagine they'd be too different, but you never know ;)
