Are you sure the switch is bûggered or does it just need adjusting?

hi Big Lad,it works fine until it takes a hissy fit and throws the 2 green M S lights on..the selector doesnt show what gear its in either until you switch her off then on again..this happened before and i replaced the switch with a used unit from one of the kind Landyzone members but that has now went the same way..cheers,Del.

Hi Del, there are at least two reasons for this behaviour in my experience:

1. Weak battery with gear selection too quick after starting the engine; the solution is to charge the battery overnight;then when you start the engine next, wait a few seconds before selecting gears.

2. XYZ switch out of alignment. - solution is to get someone in the car operating the gears while you adjust the position of the switch. When you have the right gear on the dashboard screen, you've cracked it.

Rebuild D2 ZF Selector Switch UHB100190 - Australian Land Rover Owners

could try the above if your brave or want to save some cash.
i take it your battery is good. as a low battery will give the symptons you have.
Cant remember the part # of the UK spec WXYZ switches, but all the ones I have stripped and rebuilt dont look anything like that, just a wiper arm with contacts on it - no microswitches.(I think I have 6 in stock at the moment.)
The other VERY common but overlooked fault that the WXYZ gets blamed for is the loom that goes to it rubbing through and shorting on the back of the transfer case.

hi folks, thanks for the replies so far..i just went to Morrisons Land Rover in Stirling and bought a brand new battery, the correct one for the Td5 and its still the same..i changed it over, switched on the ignition and the green M n S lights were flashing..i started her and they went out..i took the kids to the swimming and all was fine till we arrived at the pool and i tried to reverse into the space, the 'R' on the selector didnt light up and i couldnt get reverse..then the 'D' wouldnt light up either and it was like jolting into gear..the M n S lights duly lit up again..im gona have to take it off n have a look at whats going on inside, try and repair it,then hopefully get back to normal service again as the old girl should be..i would like to buy 1 if there are any going spare just incase i cant sort this one out..let me know your thoughts folks, cheers again for your input, very interesting and it gives me a couple of things to check..Del.
