Hi, i have had the three amigos coming on very regularly so took the car to my local land rover speicialist who plugged it in. They have told me that the abs unit is at fault and needs replacing, a new one will put me in the same sort of debt as Greece! so i'm looking at second hand ones. What i want to know is although the ones i have found have the same serial number SRB 101241 there are two further numbers which i presume are the year of the vehicle e.g. 02 on mine for 2002 does it matter if i use one that is from a 2000 or 2001 with a serial number of 101241 00 or 101241 01. They all have the same connections as far as i can see. If i do this job myself is it just a case of fitting the new one and bleeding the brakes?
Thanks
Andy.

I'm suspicious about such fault which need modulator replaceing.... unfortunately i can't check it myself for you:mad: ... it's risky to go for second hand unit, if u really can't ask a second oppinion from somewhere or u trust those guys so much u better send yours to be refurbished and u'll get some warranty too > Land Rover Discovery ABS Pump - ABS Repair , anyway, read this before u spend big money ABS Mod - LAND ROVER CLUB V.I.

The garage is called J&g and are i warminster i bought the car from the in may and bought my last discovery from them 10 years ago. I may try the wiring mod shown in the link first before i spend lots of money. It seams to be worse since they power bled the brakes on tuesday and now the lights come on every time i push the brake pedal hard.

sounds like shuttle valve I had mine play up did the abs mod all good now but you need to know what the dianostics said to pin point the fault

J and G used to be pretty good a few years back but I haven't had any dealings with them for a couple of years.

It does sound like shuttle valve. Have you looked into getting the mod done?

OK when you say the shuttle valve mod is that the one where you change the wiring to get rid of the internal plug and connect straight to the YG wire in the loom with an external earth to the inner wing?
Andy.

Yes,and use a new shuttle valve repair kit when you do it,the microswitches will also fail aswell.I always fit a new kit and take the wires out of the bottom and make a little protected loom which I solder and heatshrink back into the main modulator loom.
I have one in the workshop waiting right now for exactly this job....

Just a quick update and thanks to all who replied to my original post, i did the mod to the shuttle valve switches wiring today and the three amigos have not come on after extensive road tests trying out the abs and hill desent. The lights where comming on even when holding the car on the slope of the drive so now touch wood its sorted.

It sounds like you've just saved yourself a good few pennies.:)

I have the same fault ( 3 Amigos ), can anyone tell me if I remove the Shuttle valve will I lose any brake fluid and have to bleed Brakes ? Any help much appreciated.

are you sure it is shuttle valve , it comes up as fault anyhow even when its just a sensor or wheel bearing, its possible but i prefer to remove the modulator ,bleeding is easy

You can change the shuttle valve switches without taking the modulator out.

Peter

Hi Peter, have seen a u tube video showing how to replace shuttle valve leaving modulator in situ, looks easy ish ! Will I lose brake fluid when removing shuttle valves and have to bleed brakes ?

Regards

Michael

Taken car to local Land Rover garage who plugged it in & confirmed fault was shuttle valves, are you saying if I leave modulator in situ when working on shuttle valve I won't lose brake fluid ?

it shouldn't be any fluid there but there are rare cases when the SVS fails exactly due to leaking valve seals and fluid ingress then you'll have to remove the modulator and replace those seals too...first remove the switch pack and if it's dry you can do it in situ

I did this job on a neighbour's Disco 2 just last week.
He had the 3 Amigos (intermittently) so I plugged in my Nanocom which indicated an electrical problem in the shuttle valves.
Purchased a new switch unit and applied the modification. Replaced the switch unit, connected up the mod and cleared the faults. All OK.
Replacing the switch unit does require that the ABS modulator be dismounted so that you can gain access to the underneath, but if you unclip all of the supports for the brake lines the modulator can be eased into a position where you can reach the three securing bolts for the switch. I found it quite easy with a second pair of hands to take the strain and hold the ABS modulator, while I wielded the socket set.
Altogether, less than an hour on the vehicle, and no need to open any brake line.
