hi all.

was going to do an oil change on my 04 td4, thought it would be a straighforward job, used to do this on my older x reg freelander.

any how the two bolts at the front of the sump guard, the passenger side one is solid.

my socket just turns on the nut, there is no room to get mole grips on it without removing the bumper.

i remember seeing a socket advertised that could grip damaged nuts / bolts.
any one tried one of these, alternatively how long willl it take me to remove the bumper.

cheers

If its the bolts Im thinking of, then they are 17mm M10

Rachet spanner is the tool of choice for sump guard removal.

Do what Willo and Ming have done......Drill a 4" hole under the oil filter for quick access

yep nice pic willo [yawn]. . .i also drilled all the rivits out er front ,fitted new re enfoced bar un also quick release stainless bolts. . . . .er then did the same as willo . . . .

To release the bolt, take your front bumper off. Its a 10 minute job. I know done it so many times! It tells you how in the hayes manual. 2 screws on bottom each side, 2 screws on each of the wheel arches, 2 screws on the bottom central lip of the bumper, 4 screws on the top under the bonnet and 1 bolt under each of the removable flaps in each wheel arch. Thats assuming you dont have a bull bar and spotlamps.

You Need A Set Of Irwins From Machine Mart. They Are Pricey And Come In A Box , There Is Also An Add On Set So It Depends Which Size You Need But They Are Very Good For Virtually Any Size Of Bolt Or Nut Covered In The Sets.

If you think that taking off the bumper will help, then take it off. Its a 15 minute job- 14 Screws and 2 bolts. One thing i did notice is if you take it off, check that your 4 bolts holding on your fan to the radiator are not seized and then put a bit of grease on them - in case you ever need to take the fans off, saves you a job for the future! Check the haynes manual on how to take the bumper off or email me and i will walk you through it.

i got as set of ebay for a tenner, the bolts on my car were rusted to **** but it stil gripped them.

Tiny's were stuck solid so i used a torque wrench with a scissor jack underneath (to push it on hard) and a bar over the end of the wrench to get the leverage. A ton or two of landy holding the socket onto the nut sure did the trick! :D

OK thanks for enlightening me Willo. .... can you get access to the oil filter on the Td4b from that cut out?

just to point out..

the oil filter is at the front of the engine between the engine and the radiator fans (by the dip stick)

it is not a oil filter like on the old l types and thing but more of an element in a housing

remove the engine plasic cover nad you will see a large plastic black hex nut by the dip stick
undo this and remove the filter element and replace with a new element and also replace all 3 seals

then refit

No, the oil filter is in front of the engine where the oilpan bolt is in the back.???

the nuts / heads on the bolts were rusty and were just turning inside the socket.the irwin sockets gripped the bolts brill. well worth a tenner.

i thought that crap bolts etc went out with lancias, obviously not.

any how, another tale of crap landrover design.

my ,mate asked me to look at a secondhand td4 on an 02 reg with him.

it had a bad oil leak from somewhere around the top of the engine near to the injectors. i thought it must be a problem with crankcase ventilation.

any how the owner had done an oil change then accidentlaly driven over the front engine cover.

when the guy started the engine i could see bubbles of oil coming from the holes where the fron engine cover attaches to, any how my mate got a real bargain.
we degreased the motor and put a bolt in the reuired hole and no more oil leak.
