Freelander 1 Freelander prop bearings replacement td4

Hi all
Just changing prop shaft bearings on my freelander td4 and am struggling to undo ther rear prop shaft bolts to the diff.
Have correct star socket and spanner bit very very tight .
any ideas to help ?

Short 3/8 extension, adapter and 1/2 inch breaker bar does the job usually.

On the start sockets ?

Whichever side you can get it on squarely. Make sure you have a correctly fitting socket.

And if you can, roll the car forward a bit after undoing the accessible ones to bring the others in to view.

Can I not turn the prop.shaft while under motor to get to the top bolts ?
Nit surr if that possible but she is up.on axle stands at mo you see

If the whole car is up in the air then fine, you need all 4 wheels to turn.

3 wheels are up so just the fourth to jack up and put stands under
Do I have her in park or drive to remove bolts?

Try Neutral then you can turn prop and get to all bolts. If it turns when you try to unbolt use park. Then neutral to turn then park.

I'm lucky to have an inspection pit, so can just roll the car forward a bit.

A lot more room to work in and safer to... unless you kneel down on the dried leaves in the bottom of the pit and a 100 hedgehog spines stick in your knee! That fookin hurt.

HippoRamps are a good option to. Google is your friend for next time.

How long depends in what make bearings you have bought. £20 off ebay will be 3 to 6 months. FAG or SKN will be 5 years ish

My '99 is running on its original bearings, mind you its had a castrated IRD for the last 10 year so they are just turning, no drive torque going through them.

I have noticed that original equipment, if it lasts then it lasts well. Our 2000 model has all original bushes and ball joints. 60k miles but 24 years old. New 'rubber' whatever it is made off seems to disintegrate before you've tightened the bolts up.

I always use OEM parts, or sometimes genuine, but none of them seem to last like the original parts

I think OEM is used quite loosely these days!

Not quite sure why we can't make rubber that lasts. My 1967 cortina has all the original window rubbers and cooling hoses. They are a bit hard though
