Picking up a Dec 2003 TD4 Auto Sport tomorrow. Must be one of the first facelifts.

53k from new. Not a runner but worth it for a low miler. Reported alternator failure but we will see !!

Looks in very good condition.
I think I am right in thinking Sport means 18 inch wheels, lowered suspension and stiffer shocks but little else ?? Obviously LR saved cash as no roof bars !!

Watch this post.

My freelander td4 sport has same wheels as that in pic also seats are the same mine also has a factory fitted fuel burning heater and does have roof rails unsure about the suspension being lowered and stiffened as mine are basically ****e

Yes those are sport 18" rims, the best looking rims LR ever made IMO.

There are 2 sport specs, the normal sport which is similar to SE non sport models, and sport premium which is similar to the non sport HSE. Both sport models have 40mm lower springs which are 30% stiffer, along with stiffer shocks.
Both the sport and sport premium have different seats to the normal FL1, the sport gets vinyl, the sport premium gets leather. The audio system is also better on the premium. From memory roof bars were an option on the facelift models.

That is a find, 53k miles in 20 years!

Sport suspension is very noticeable when driving. It sits firmly on the road and you can take corners with minimal body roll.

Well mine definitely needs either new springs or shocks because it has plenty of body roll ,probably never been changed ,it does have the leather heated seats though I will need to find part numbers for the shocks and springs so I don't end up fitting standard ones,

Inserted fully charged battery and voila.

Can't see much wrong with it. How the tyres got through the MOT I am unsure. Cracks through sidewalls.
Only took a 10 hour round trip ! The old 200k miler TD4 towed it back on a trailer perfectly.

Full inspection on ramp tomorrow. Looks good underneath. One owner from new.

Just going through the history.

Best size tyres for 18 inch ?

Yes I agree. Also less banging and rim damage on our extra smooth Devon roads !!

Initial survey completed.
Runs fine, some white smoke but think it needs a run, it maybe the result of much cranking by PO to get running when battery was flat.
When does EGR open? Found the clip missing so that might be feeding air in and upsetting the fuel mix when accelerating.
Smoke clears on idle but comes back when you boot it but only under load, but revving up when stationary.

No rust, VCU test is good.
One tyre illegal but part worn spare matches and is same tread wear so that will go on for now.

All electrics work, heated screen fitted, lower valance is missing, the bit around the air intake grille under the bumper. Have got a spare, might make it removable as getting the under pan screws out on a facelift always stresses me out!

Auto box smooth. One front brake binding. Discs worn.

No kerbing on wheels, all bushes look good. Silent over bumps.

Looks like a keeper. Result !! Pleased so far.

Just the white smoke to resolve, egr operation anyone ???

I'd have a 3dr sport premium if one came up locally at a good price.

I fitted the Cooper 235/55/18 tyres to cope with bad roads better, as the 50% profile original tyres were just too hard for my liking. The Coopers were a huge improvement over the just legal Pirelli tyres the rims came with.

The EGR is ECM controlled, but if it's still functional, then the intake manifold will be clogged up as mine was. TD4 SE only had 80k on it when I bought it, and the inlet manifold was restricted by a ½. It smoked at full throttle, but that went away after cleaning out the goop, and fitting new boost hoses.

Glad the rest is ok, except for a few maintenance items.
Good find.

Looks good well done 👌
it’s got the heater and the heated screen I guess
the seats are really good at keeping clean but boy on a hot day they leave dimples in your backside and legs and make you sweat even with the A/C on
my first Freelander was a 04 sport 3 door same silver loved it ! It was 6 weeks old when I got it done 58;000m would still have it if it hadn’t been written off

definitely a keeper if I had found it even though it’s 5 doors I would have been over the moon best colour and
model

Certainly worth a 10 hour drive and trailer trip ! The nice thing about having a tilting trailer is that you can strike a deal and pick it up next day if someone wants shot of it. Won't upset you but it cost around the price of a really tatty high miler.

Sometimes timing works out.

It was serviced in Feb 2023 and has done 200 miles since then. Will strip and clean all the manifold and EGR then disable it. White smoke only when pulling hard is the only problem.

Will now be getting rid of a couple of TD4 projects as time is limited these days.

Rather than do work and sell them I am thinking of selling the vehicle with all faults listed and supplying all the parts to repair. A sort of repair it yourself kit !! Have a 2002 Manual in silver and a 2006 Auto in silver. PM me if you want any info - local delivery is an option.

If it's had the same fuel in it since February last year, it will be well past its best. Diesel has a guaranteed life of just 6 weeks, before it starts to degrade.
Maybe fresh fuel will improve the way it runs?

So spare hour today.
Checked pcv and filter, checked glow plugs. Cleaned egr and inlet manifold and map sensor.

All good. Refitted pipes that were loose on unfastened.

Running fine, not a trace of smoke when cold.

Less worried as it smokes when warmed up thoroughly and booted. Then smokes gently at idle until it clears. Got a feeling this is diesel in the exhaust. I have no idea how long it was cranked over with an inadequate battery.

Will refuel and take for a run, off the main roads of course! Hope it clears.

I think the warm smoke is a clue to the exhaust being impregnated with unburnt fuel.
