Hi all
Can anyone tell me if the injector I have acquired is right for my 2003 TD4

It is supposed to be from a TD4 but I don't know what year. It looks the same but I believe that mine are not coded and later ones are - are newer ones ok to go on a 2003 ?

The numbers on the cap are:
EOM
7.789.573
044580

Visible condition is great.

Thanks

that part number pictured on top of your injector is 0445110. This is the part number for manual TD4 vehicles.
Our 2004 takes those.

They are a direct replacement for STC4555 (the land rover OEM)

It's only the auto box version from 2004ish I think which takes a different number

Brilliant - thanks for that . I have an injector going down so am going to swop out until I find it.

Is a leak back test absolute proof of a dodgy injector?

Does anyone know how I can make up some kit to do it? I have some bottles but how do I get fuel to the injectors with bottles attached - or am I being stupid! (don't answer the last bit!)

5min Leakback test:

-Injector cover off.
-Spill rail pipes removed
-Softly clamp return pipe pre-injector connections.
-Remove any fuel from the top injector connector.
-Turn ignition on.
-If an injector fills up instantly, its failed.
-All injectors should fill at the same rate.

Yes there are more correct ways to do the leakoff test and those being more accurate for partially failed injectors. This is the quickest and if you have a failed injector, it is very obvious.

My opinion only.

Doh! I am a jerk!!! I forgot they were fed from the rail - ha ha - I can get some pipe and make up a good leak back set.

I like the 5 min test but it us a partially gone injector and have an idea which one it is thanks to a cheapo stethoscope!

Anyone know if I can anneal the copper washers at the base of the injectors? I cannot get new ones in time to do an injector swop so thought I could heat them cherry red and plunge them to make them soft again?

Most important thing is cleaning out the seat inside the head.

And cherry red seems a little excessive to me :)

Make sure the seat is nice and clean is definately most important , clean down the washer , then warm the copper washer gently if you feel the need :)

Also, hope it sorts :)

Thats how we used to anneal injector washers in the old days, mainly on Ford PSV's as they were thick enough not to melt:)

Ok I think I have found the problem. I have just come back from a long trip and the vehicle played up - missing and occasionally blowing white smoke - seemed like over fueling - switching off synergy box improved it and I got home.

So I have just stripped down the top and saw wet around injector number 3 - so after a bit of juggling around I have got it out - and it's pretty coked up and wet so looks like I have found the duff one.

I have another but it's untested - going to give it a go though.

Here us the question - how do I clean the injector tube in the head and the seat without all the rubbish going down into the cylinder? Or doesn't it matter?

Tip for getting injectors out - put the fuel pipe back on and tapping it back and forth with a small hammer while prising it up under the union nut with a Jimmy bar! Worked a treat - but protect the plastic cam cover.

You mentioned doing a leak test. This was a home made kit i used. Dearest part was the connector for the top of the injectors. Still cheaper than buying a kit

With all the carbon build up on the old injector it looks like the injector washer had failed so a new set of washers may be the way to go. If I remember correctly from my Tech College days quenching was used when you wanted to harden something ( must give this a try;) )

Yep sure looks that is the problem. Also I did some research and to soften copper heat to cherry Ted and cool slowly to harden do the same but quench - you were right. Thanks

To normalise metal heat it up and let it cool down naturally.
If you want it hard heat it up then quench it.

If you quench in oil watch out for it exploding, used to happen to me all the time.

Well I am tearing my hair out now. I took all the injectors out in the end and got new washers and o rings. I replaced the carboned injector with an immaculate second hand one and put it all back - guess what no difference - still a miss and some white smoke!

Now it's possible that it's one of the other injectors I suppose but I noticed that injector 1 seems to sit a smidgen higher than the others - I cannot be sure but it may be that there is a sealing washer down on the tube - I cannot seem to hook it out but if there were would that make it miss slightly?

If I was to take the injector out again and drop it in without a washer ( on the basis there is one there!) and it turned out there wasn't one would I damage anything? How close to the piston crown is the injector tip?

Cheers

Get a torch?

Injector washers are copper and your head isnt :)

You'd be able to tell if there was already a washer down there very easily.

Ha ha - yes I have done that - I even had a look with a endoscope with light on the camera head! How equipped am I for an amateur!!!

Seriously the washer is not as shiny as the others looks a bit textured and has a hole which is not perfectly round. It doesn't look copper neither does it look silver. I spent ages cleaning etc. Looks like I will have to take the injector out again but at least this one is number one so it's easy - I can pop them out in minutes now! Ha ha

Really though this slight miss is driving me scatty - it's under load when you notice it. Power seems fine and standing still it revs to the redline easy and smoothly.
