TD4 Fuel Pump - going or what?

So my beloved Freelander has a fault! Noooooo......

Wouldn't start the other month so garage guy came out tapped the fuel pump (under/behind drivers side rear wheel arch), it whirred into life and it started... No probs til this morning when it did the same, so opened fuel cap to make sure no airlock or vacumn type thingy going on. Still no start so rolled around on the floor (and no I was not wearing a skirt!!), randomly thumped the underside in the vague area I though pump was (quite pleased with myself about this!!!) and it started.

The question is ??? The pump was replaced by previous owner (according to receipt in history) just under 2 years ago, is it likely to have gone again or should I get fuel filters changed or something?

Not had the car long (Dec).
NB: having read some of the archived stuff on fuel pumps its a 2003 model TD4 so just the one fuel pump I'm thinking?

If it's got one in the wheel arch then you will have a 2nd high pressure pump at the front end to the left of the front of the engine behind the oil filter.....should be a black cp1 bosch unit.
Having said that if hitting the pump got it started either the pump is on it's way out or there could be a bad connection.

Earlier TD4's had an in-tank pump and a 2nd pump in the engine bay. As yours has the one in the drivers rear wheel arch this is the only electrical pump you have.

The symptoms you have are classic signs of failure so get it changed before it gives up completely and I would advise getting a replacement from Land Rover, you can get cheaper ones elsewhere but they can be very noisy. I bought my 1st replacement from a Euro Car parts and hated how noisy it was - only lasted 8 months before becoming temperamental. Now replaced with a quiet OEM one

Very true it is the only electrical pump, the bosch unit on the engine is driven off the timing chain and is on all td4's with a pump in the wheel arch......they don't give much trouble apart from they can leak from the piston caps when 1st started in cold weather when the seals are on the way out.

Excellent.... Thank you..... I imagine the replacement one wasn't a Landrover part as it is noisy (when it works!). Will get the garage onto it soonest

I think the genuine ones are made by pierburg and should set you back £130ish on e-bay, just search freelander td4 remote fuel pump
The cheaper ones are about £50-£100 but just goes to show they don't last and can be noisy
It's an easy job to do yourself should take less than an hour, there will be a thread somewhere on here explaining how to do it

Fab will have a look on there, Garage (supplied it) has offered to fit it for free if I get the part, but I will look for the guides to fitting as its about time I started to learnhow to fix the blinking thing! Rear window has packed in today so Freelander is back in the doghouse.... If only I could get one thing fixed before something else went!
