Hi all. Hoping for some help. Helping my friend with his early Freelander 1 td4 , the one with the fuel pump and fuel filter under the bonnet. We’re in Portugal so left hand drive. So I’ve 3 questions:
It looks like we have to remove both the fuse box and the ECU box to get at the fuel filter. Can this be true ? For a regular maintenance job? Really ?
Is there another filter between the in-tank pump and the under-bonnet filter.
What the heck is that little filter on the end of a pipe, floating about the left rear of the engine compartment. It looks like an inline filter but it’s only got one pipe connected. It seems to be joined to a small lump on the cylinder block. That filter on my friends FL is completely trashed. What damage could have been done ? My yellow lighter on top of fuel filter

So in order.
1. It looks like the engine bay filter is hard to get to. Right at the top of the plastic bracket that holds the filter and pump is a single x head screw. Remove this, lift the whole assembly and it will come free and by undoing the quick release fittings you can remove the unit to service it. Bit fiddly but possible without removing anything else.


2. There is a filter in the in tank pump unit but they don't tend to get clogged. Remove unit from tank to check it if needed.

3. The plastic filter is connected to the turbo vacuum solenoid as a breather and just vents to the air. Only one connection. This needs to be clean and up out of harms way. They are simple in line fuel filters that are used. If damaged dirt could get back into the turbo actuator system and cause problems.

I have found this photo of the rear of the assembly. You can just make out the screw that is unscrewed but not removed all the way before the assembly is lifted off the bracket.

Oy! I am really appreciative. Thanks guys. Sorry no immediate response. Usually I don’t do much, my retirement here in Portugal very quiet, mainly drinking wine and doing a bit of gardening. Suddenly life got busy !
Got the air filter and that little in-line filter. Problem with fuel filter is that just now sun is really bright which makes it really hard to see into the dark shadows to look for that Phillips screw and I keep forgetting my close up glasses. My usual bi-focals useless for mechaniking. Ill attack it on a dull day when we get one.
Concentrating on getting my Peugeot 406 estate through the local version of MOT
