I have been told that my 53 Plate TD4 Engine Crankshaft has failed (Spllit). Making a knocking noise and has been inspected by landrover and another mechanic..

This is despite the engine being replaced by Land Rover 3 years ago (Free of charge as a gesture of Goodwill), plus it has only done 32K Miles..

Has anybody else experienced this problem or have any advise?

Thanks,
EDWARD TERRE

new engine 3 years ago and free of charge, which made your car 6 years old when replaced  no car manufactura would do that surely:confused:

I have only done 32K Miles since the "Replacement" engine went in three years ago.... (Been fully serviced etc since this)

Have checked the Pulley and this is OK but the crank is moving - this has been backed up by main dealer who confirmed it is damaged / spllit and has never seen this before on a TD4!!!

3 Years ago the car was caught in a small flood and took up water into the engine whilst being driven - after a long battle land rover agreed to replace the Engine / Turbo FOC - I am now doubting this was done correctly as aparantly the Crankshaft failure is extremely rare and the primary cause is from Water in the Engine!! LR are wiping their hands of it saying the guarantee for the replacement engine was only 1 Year.

Not ideal!!

I would be gratefult for any ideas..

Many Thanks.

200,000 K on the clock same engine 2nd gearbox and still pulls as strong as an ox uses no oil or water hope im not tempting fate here

How did you get a replacement engine for free on a 6 year old car?
Also, LR engines tend to be reconditioned units that get sent back to factory to be striped and repaired before getting sent back out to a dealer to be fitted.

Now your cars so old, it's tough **** really, scrap or get an engine from a scrappy as your way past any form of good will from LR now.

How do they know the crank has split though, have they dropped the bottom to check it out?

If it got water in it in a "small flood" then you very lucky to get your first replacement under warranty. Surely that failure was just caused by abuse by the user

mine was 173000 miles on the clock and never missed a beat ok I did have a water leek but that was fixed it was a small hole in the metal pipes at the back of the engin .
But getting water into a engin is a no no it destroys everthing I am ver curious how you go a new engin but look on Ebay there are some good ones out there

Mine was on 114,000 miles when the crank gave up. I've since heard that this isn't an unusual end to a TD4 engine but given the coverage on the forums it doesn't sound like a huge problem. Although the guy who supplied my replacement engine said he does a fair trade in them

I recently picked the car up and the new engine runs very well, it has paperwork linking it to a car that had done 53,000 miles. The garage swapped my EGR bypass and I've salvaged and fitted my Pierburgh MAF, Synergy and BMW Oil Seperator. The garage are stripping off all the saleable parts; injectors, fuel rail, EGR, high pressure pump, etc. That should help recover a good portion of the costs on the replacement engine and fitting.
