Whilst I was fiddling around under the bonnet today, I noticed a pipe sticking out of the top of the gearbox. Nothing connected to it. Is this just a breather pipe of some sort or should there be a pipe connected to this?

I have a metal pipe up the back of the engine, above the IRD, looks like it should be attached somewhere, looks like it had a broken end. No idea what that is.....best leave it alone :)

It's the breather for the auto gearbox. Leave as is. Nothing attached to it.

hiya

ref these breather pipes, may i ask a silly question is it where sometimes people put long hoses on there for a protection if they go wading etc please

i of course intend to leave them untouched but you hear of people running tubes off the axles as well etc for wading

thks again

You can put a pipe on the auto breather to raise it higher. I would put a u shape at the top so the hole was downwards or side ways to stop anything dropping in. Pipe will need to be able to take the temperature of the auto. It gets hot and it's by the engine.

I keep out of water these days. The sand/mud in it gets into seals and bearings. Also the shock to the engine/auto of sudden cold water. Raising breathers is one thing. The flywheel area on mine has an open hole at the front of the engine where the flywheel locking pin goes in, for water to get in. It doesn't get in the engine but it will wash round the fly wheel. I think this is why my crank shaft seal has a slight leak. Yarwell sand.

ive only been in water up to sill level and thats it and was only once

hear so many horror stories and to be honest mine isn't kitted out , ie snorkel etc so just stay away from any deep water and just make sure i don't go any deeper than my sills and that would only be if there was a country lane flooded etc and if im not sure just dont go through it

had thought about putting some longer breather tubes on the autobox, rear diff etc as an overkill, but dont know if anyone else has done it

wouldnt go to the level of fitting a snorkel as if i did want to go into deep water would buy a 90 , will be good when my son james gets his, can then frighten the life out of him getting water over the bonnet, lololol , but will make sure a snorkel etc is fitted

but did tell him he must keep away from mods for a while due to ins mods

would there also be a hole in my box as u mention about water getting i to ur flywheel etc

u mention an auto breather may i ask where about that is please, or would they just be on the autobox, diff, etc

did u ever see that little suzuki on utube go into the water and thought itnwas going to sink, lolol

You'll need wellies for driving through water in a tratter. The door seals int much good.

edit: will also come through the rust holes in the bulkhead/floor.
