TD4 and towing

Hi All,
I would like some of your views on towing with my freelander td4 04 plate, I have towed my caravan (yes I know, - sorry) for many years behind cars, most recently mondeo tdci and that towed beautifully, on our last trip down to Tenby with the freelander it towed just as good on the level but show it a hill or an incline and it was 50 no matter how you wiggled the gears!, yes I know 50 is the legal maximum for towing on main roads but I would have thought there would have been somthing left under the pedal the mondeo could even accelerate from 50 ( in spain I will add) the van weighs between 1300 - 1400 kg depending on how much stella and red wine is on board so its not near its max tow.

Any comments are appreciated, but what it excells at is pulling the van off wet fields which front wheel drive cars are just laughable at! which is why we bought it.

My best advice to you as you are towing a fair bit is to pay £149.00 ish to Roverron and get his box of tricks for the TD4.

Do a search on Roverron, i have just done my wifes TD4 manual and the car is transformed power wise. The overall 'FEEL' when driving it is so much better than standard.

It has so much more left in it power wise and i have noticed the fuel consumption is better as im no longer foot to the floor all the time to get the thing moving the way i like.

Thanks for that, have already thought about that exact same thing, just waiting for lr warranty to run out then get one, just wanted some input as i`m new to 4x4 .

My Td4 pulls my 1500kg caravan without a problem, i hardly ever need to change down and it is so much better than my scenic 1.9dci pulled my 1st caravan (1100kg)
Having said that any car is put under strain towing a big white box and when all said and done its only a 2ltr.
My mate tows 1650kg with a BMW X5 3.0 td and thats a different kettle of fish.
Dont wait til warranty runs out as Roverron is so easy to remove if needed. you will be amazed at the difference......

The Td4 has a higher torque to power ratio at the lower end of the revs, great towing machine! When you get up to the higher end of the revs the power drops off.

I wouldnt bother with your notifying your insurance, in the unlikely event of an accident you would have plenty of time to remove the power loom before an insurance inspector called out

Out of interest, what is the maximum weight of a caravan that you can tow under Domestic, Private Light Goods class of insurance.

A standard trailer is 750kg max! Any higher weight and you need commercial insurance.

get yo self a gearbox oil cooler tho - coz they are known to overheat when towing.

I wud normally suggest Adrian Flux for insurance - but they is mucking me about at the mo.

The maximum weight of a caravan is only restricted
to the max tow weight of the vehice towing, 2000kg in the case of the freelander. the 750kg limit is for an unbraked trailer, over this they must have brakes.
