Now got two D2's sitting in the yard mine and a colleagues 00 GS model also on gas, which he has just acquired. It has what sounds like noisy tappets, I know it could also be a leaky/cracked manifold yet to check that. The noise is only noticeable on idle and under load, cruising it's quiet as a church mouse.

The question is what will an independent charge for doing the job new cam tappets etc and how long does it take for a compentent DIY mechanic and do I need any special tools.

Cheers

A garage would probably charge quite a bit; it is not a difficult job but you will need to remove the plenum and inlet manifold, and valley gasket to get at the cam followers. You will need to remove the rocker arms and push rods (keep them in order). To do the camshaft you will then need to remove the timing cover, which also means taking off the crank pulley.

If you're going that far you may as well pop the heads off and have a good look inside, check for any slipped liners, check the condition of the cylinder bores then you can also do a thorough inspection of the heads, de-coke then grind the valves.

If you are reasonably handy with the spanners you should be able to do all that in a weekend if you're happy doing it but if you are a bit more cautious, allow 3 days. If you do all that then imho you really ought to replce the camshaft, followers, timing chain, oil pressure relief valve and spring. I know that sounds like a lot, well I suppose it is essentially half rebuilding the engine but you will know all is well and hopefully you'll not have to touch it for many 10's of thousands of miles.

Cheers Kev, 2 days that's my problem finding 2 days to do it in.

Interestingly I was doing a couple of other bits for him and noticed that while the noise is there on idle and acceleration under load, it disappears when revving standing still.
