The VCU showed many problems in the states, most Merkins bombing up and down the highway at 70/80mph. The VCU should never be subjected to that sort of driving.

and why not? - of course a modern car should be capable of travellin on motorways at 70! are yu seriously suggesting the Hippoos shud be limited to 55?

No speed limitations, just the modified 2wd selection at the touch of a button ;) We dont need 4wd for motorway driving

You are lucky if you get 70mph out of defender, if you do your ears are bleeding cos of the noise and its weaving from one side of the road to the other

I am not claiming that the Freelander is the most reliable car in the world, or that potential owners shouldn't be warned of possible problems, but looking around there are a lot of Freelanders out there, the majority are serving their owners well and they are happy with them.

nonsense, so you've seen some being driven so you've assumed that the owners are "happy" with it - do you stop and ask them ?

how can you possibly say this - i'm sure there may well be some happy owners, i know one myself, but to say that "the majority are serving their owners well and they are happy" just can't back be backed up

and your comment regarding it not being the most reliable car is the understatement of the century

just be happy that you've got the money to sort your car when it goes wrong, the warnings mentioned on this site are a good thing - not everyone can afford to open their wallets everytime something goes wrong, i'd hate to have brought one thinking it was going to be reliable and then to find it would cost more than it's worth to repair - that's what the warning are for

more nonsense

C'mon Sean, are you trying to tell me that a defender is pleasant to drive at motorway speeds of 70mph.

Your teeth feel like they are gonna get rattled from your jaw, ear drums punctured over 4000rpm, not to mention the warping of the commercial panels so that they sound like a Rolf Harris whopper board

I've been in a td5 defender HT doing 95 on a motorway and it wasn't that much noiseier than most cars I driven or been in. A good sound deadening material (laminate floor foilbacked underlay in this case) stuck to the side panels & roof wll stop the rattling.

Even with the sound deadening, lead sandwich under the bonnet and side supports its by no means a motorway cruiser

Fink I'd prefer that to standing on the motorway waiting for the AA man in this weather

In all honesty, I have only ever had to wait once for the recovery man,,,,,,

That was a two hour wait, Yep you're thinking hgf right?

wrong, dead battery, jump starter in the boot hadnt been charged in about 6 months either

i quite agree will you old chap, it not a motorway cruiser its more of an off road machine and therefore designed for off road. the gaylander was a badly conceived compromise to supply folk that wanted a fashionably 4x4 but without the ruggish looks of the defender or the price tag of a RR

my current fav LR is my 1989 110 hardtop (with a 200Tdi in it) we very often travel from Staffs to Skye stopping only to refuel, spending most of the time sitting at 65-75 mph - it's on MT tyres - it's got no additional sound proofing other than being boarded at the rear in marine ply and we have no trouble holding a conversation at normal volumes - the seating position suits me just fine (and i am 6 foot 5)

we when arrive it's more than able to deal with most types of road/track/field/hill conditions - often with the best part of a ton in the rear

just admit it, your car just can't do that and certainly wont get to see it's 18th birthday

Well thread was reported to moderators to be removed as a sticky,
EDITED - Thread removed as a sticky, dont know who by?
So whats your reason for leaving DaveC?

None now, so I'm still here.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions about Freelanders (or anything else) and anyone else is entitled to disagree, and Landyzone is probably a good place to do it (even if it occasionally turns into a pantomime "yes it is - no it isn't" farce). My concern was that the thread being made a sticky made the anti Freelander views appear to be offical Landyzone policy. Now it has been unstuck I have no ptroblem.

Just to prove the point, this reply will be putting the thread back to the top!

Yes I agree, everyone is entitled to say what they like (within forum rules of course)

My point was, how did a junior member manage to get a sticky, on a topic they know very little about. You should have more forum credibility for that sort of thing

I'm a big fan of the Twin cam 16v k-series, an enthusiast. I admit there are hgf from the original Payen gasket on all models of cars. Again we dont have official figures from the hundreds of thousands of k-series out there, it was around 0.3% several years back, obviously this will have increased since then.

Whether its the 1.8i, VVC or 1.8turbo, you have to admit its a versatile engine, squeezes out every ounce of power possible.

The low end rev range from the 1.8i suits the FL1, peak torque at 2750rpm, the VVC is the other extreme it doesnt throw the power out until after 4500rpm, limiter comes in at 7500rpm.

You havent lived until you have hit the limiter in a VVC, you'll be smiling for the rest of the day.
