Disco 1 Swivel balls superceded part number FTC5366 not the same - 2mm difference

I have just bought a new swivel ball part number FTC5366 which supercedes the original FRC7065, but the problem is that the surface that the sleeve 571822 runs on is not machined the same, and hence the sleeve sits 2mm further outwards. (I measured..).. this means that the CV joint also sits 2mm further out, which thus in turn means that when stub axle is bolted on its so tight that the whole swivel joint is locked solid... (ie the stub is hard up against the CV joint, which in turn is pushing the sleeve onto the inner surface of the swivel ball.

There seems no other options or alternative part numbers for the sleeve or the spacer.

Any ideas?

note that the swivel FTC5366 I bought was OEM from Rimmer Bros.

This is the correct part numebrs they specify for the non-ABS Disco1 and that it supercedes FRC7065.

Maybe a photo of the two showing the difference would help.

This is the original with machined surface. (part number FRC7065 that was purchased about 12 years ago.)

This is the superceded one that is 2mm thicker. Note that the flat surface is not machined. (this is OEM part FTC5366)

Another evidence that "OEM" is far from being like genuine...it's just another replacement which was made by the same manufacturer as the genuine but not at the same standards

Well I have emailed Rimmer Bros so either they will have to take it back, and I will buy a genuine one. It's the last part actually on a complete rebuild I am doing. Many other parts I did buy genuine (event the new front springs), the swivel ball was one of the very few "OEM" parts actually bought...

I observed that if it's not to be genuine a bearmach replacement can be better than the so called OEM ones

Incidentally the 12 year old one I removed (FRC7065) was I think a Bearmach one. It was only due to slight pitting at the top that i decided to replace it. Luckily I kept the bearings in place with cable ties, and not chucked it in the scrap pile, so it looks like we may end up having to refit it...

its not really,ftc5366 wouldnt need a machined surface for the support bush, neither would any frc7065 after 92, its more accurate to say ft5366 is only a replacement for later frc7065s

just that you can't buy FRC7065 anymore cos all the suppliers are sending you to FTC5366 as being the right one which supersedes the other... something similar happened some time ago to a friend of mine who has a RRC

I just rebuilt the front of my 96 Disco with FRC7065 from Paddocks who have them in stock.

That FRC7065 is just a superseded part number the part is the same, it seems they have some left from the old stock

OK I'm confused now - what bush goes in there? I dont recall mine having one at all TBH...

This is the sleeve that runs on the surface. When the stub axle is bolted up, the CV joint is pressed against a spacer, that presses again the halfshaft, and thus then this sleeve.

you wont have unless its an early disco or rrc

mine is very early... in fact I think it's one of the very early four doors........ and has the old style brake pad retainers and split pins etc like a 1980's Rangerover.

An update to this thread.
I’ve encountered the exact same issue with new parts not having the machined landing surface for the bronze sleeve on the shaft.
My solution has been to give it to friendly machinists - who for £80 will machine the surface in two of said swivel balls. If you’re in the Bristol area, they are “D&S Machining” of Yate area.
