mhm you might be able to help with this one!!

i'm eventualy going to be mounting my h12 winch on my disco'and was wondering'as the winch only draws around 2amps to operate would i be able to rig the old unused stereo volume switches for cab operated winch controls? with some kind of switchable circuit for external lead?

Use the positions yes, but the switches are not designed for you have in mind in fact they are not switches in the true sense but a but a varable resistor.

ahh there lies the problem i'm having, finding switches that will fit as i dont want to chop and change the dash but thankyou anyway discool guess it's back to the drawing board

Just a thought may be you could use two rear wiper switches with relays or heated rear window is another switch.

hmm hrw switch might do it as there permenantly off untill you press them!! is that right! wish i knew more about lectrickery bits would you happen to know if there a timmed switch or just a circuit activator as the hrw turns off after awhile? or am i just complicating things'i know less than buggerall about electrickery in landy's.

Is it a standard switch on, then switch off switch you are after ?.
HRW switch is ok for on/off function ie press on then press off, the switch it's self is non-latching and will just control a latching relay, not a latching relay with a timer as it does in it's HRW function
If you wish to control the ins and outs of the winch then I think the dash switch size may be a bit small, ie. pressing a rear washer switch to reel in and another rear washer switch to play out could cause problems if u accidently pressed the wrong one.

basicly yes thats what im looking at doing but i see your point of pressing the wrong one  hmm could be dangerous, maybe i should look at some kind of rocker switch, just trying to keep the dash area looking as factory standard as poss.

Back to the Drawing Board then halo... It's a shame there's nowhere to fit an additional switch panel in a disco, unless u want to cut holes in the dash, unlike the Defenders I have seen fitted with switches with safety covers over them and all labled up.
I assume u will have a hand held wired remote for your winch, to me that's much better standard setups always are.:)
