Finding it harder to get into 1st and 4th, was thinking a gearbox oil change would be a good start. Can anyone tell me please how much oil and what type I should be using?

Also any other hints and tips on changing the oil would be smashing.

Thanks all.

Had the same problem with sticky gears. It turned out to be dry linkage joints from gear stick to gear box. If you lift up the housing where the gear stick goes through the floor and spray the linkage there with white grease, if you can get under the car do the same with the front gear linkage, this procedure cured my sticky gear change problem.

Thanks Jamesmartin, got 2x1litre bottles of fleabay for £8.25 a bottle.

Grayo, not a bad idea, might give it a spray anyway.

Thanks all. Now just need to find an Allen Key that fits the Drain and filler plugs in the gearbox. Anyone know what size it is? Think it's about a 10 or 12mm, but not got one to check.

I don't like to necropost but I have a followup question. My 1.8 is experiencing similar symptoms but not as serious just yet. I have to push the clutch right to the metal to change in the higher gears or it somtimes grinds. Going into 1st is especially stiff.

Sounds like maybe I should change the slave and bracket, can anyone confirm? I'll also do the various oil changes and greasings while I'm at it.

Will.

cracked bracket flexing common.
maybe the clutch isn't fully disengaging if it is worn out

That's what I was thinking. The clutch itself was changed not too long ago according to the previous owner though I have no service history to verify it - not much reason to doubt him as it's my missus' boss. But it does feel like the clutch isn't fully disengaging - the occasional grind certainly adds weight to that theory. I see you can get kits that include the bracket on fleabay, any good?

Ta fellas, looks like that's the culprit. I'll get it up on ramps and have a good look then I'll get the part in.

You might need to get a new bracket
