It might be time to build a pc into me car. I want it to do Sat nav and music. I dont want a laptop in the 110 because theres no room to put it. I want a touch screen.
I have looked at the Archos 9 as a base but am unsure whether it will be any good for the sounds.
Anyone got any ideas.

Yeh, put a USB sound card onto it which outputs on RCA, then you can plug in direct into a little amp and distribute to your speakers.

I run a computer in the Series most of the time, though, i just use a FM transmitter - not much point going for 'quality' sound when you have no roof and an engine roaring at you continously.

Personally I would use a laptop as a base. They take better to shock, better power consumption/options and so on and have the advantage of having a battery. Will you be the CarPC from an aux or main battery?

If I was doing it, I would use a laptop and hide it away somewhere safe. Extend the control/LED panel on the laptop either by relocating or making a new panel in the dash - with power switch, hard drive and other LEDs and so on. Touchsceen is a good idea, but I would also have wireless keyboard and mouse (using 2.4Ghz wireless rather than infared or bluetooth for obvious reasons) just in case. I would also have a roof/side external mounted wireless antenna, just because, well, makes sense to me :)

I'd stick with a tablet, just stick a solid state hard drive in it (SSD) - i used a normal one in mine, it lasted 15 minutes.

And it has no problem with shock - i've dropped the bugger enough times and its still going strong.

How about an IPad? Smaller than a PC, loads of musik, WiFi or 3G. Plug it into the ciggie lighter and off you go. Not too sure what the sound is like though.

i run a pda in my 110 - can be following route (oz or memory map) via remote sat reciever whilst listening to mp3 music via 2 pc speakers powered by 240v invertor

Ipad wont run Memory Map.

It will be run off an aux battery. The stereo currently is powered by the 2nd batery in the 110. I want something with a decent enough sized screen but not too big as it will need to fit above the top of the Mud Dash.

I dont want a laptop in the 110 as I want something that can be easily removed and there aint anywhere suitable to put a laptop.

id use a netbook its half the size of a laptop and should sit on the dash no probs with a little velcro and run its headfone jack straight into a small ish amp round the 100wat mark then drive me speakers off that i did something cimilar in me old s3 it had the lpg tank behind the seats so being young and mental i boxed it in with a 16"sub in the centre and a 6x9 either side running off a 1000watt amp fed by a cassette walkman bloody ace only problem me windows used to rattle open with the bass

I have had a spazz and bought a Archos 10........now I know I said I wasnt going the laptop route but what the hell. I have also ordered a mount for it. Now for the fun part.........how am I gonna make the sound come out of the speakers. Do I keep the old stereoin it for the radio and run that through an amp with the pc going into the amp too???? oh its all so confusing....

Get one of these to boost the sound NOt the greatest but good enough for my MP3 player.
2CH 500W MOTORCYCLE SPEAKERS AMPLIFIER MP3 AMP AMPS W8T on eBay (end time 18-Sep-10 09:12:41 BST)

I was looking at the 4 channel one they do with the radio.......Casuse I have a pair of big Mission home speakers behind my passenger seats and was concerned whether it would be powerfull enough for them. Also should I keep the stereo in for the radio and put both through a different amp?

Use 2 into 1 phono plugs and run both Cos ya int gonna have em both obn at same time Or if ya feeling Industrius wire em thru switch so ya can swap between em without having to unplug em.

If you have a stereo already in it i can have a quick dig around but i'm sure i still have the odd spare FM transmitter which transmits from the standard 3.5mm headphone jack (i.e. what will be on the laptop) then just tune one of your radio channels to it.

That way you don't ALWAYS need to have the laptop on to listen to music, you can just revert back to the stereo.

Happily have a look and send you it across in the post if you want.

Fair enough. Never once had to change the one in my series, its buried behind the dash somewhere set on one frequency
