We have a 2008 Freelander 2 hse.
Always been a good car but we have an intermittent fault now where the stereo, and sat nav will go in and off, I take the panel off and unplug various cables both optical and other plugs and it goes back to normal but then suddenly gets this fault again.

Also sometimes the phone button doesn't work either and the heater fan I think wouldn't work when the fault was intermittent.

Any ideas? I bought a optical loop test but haven't a clue how to use it.

By panel, do you mean the screen?
Normally random shutting down and restarting is due to an issue with the BT module failing. A diagnostic read on the infotainment system will point towards the issue.
The heater fan will also need a diagnostic rear, but it should be unrelated to the infotainment system, as they are on different power supplies, and use different control modules.

The panel where the BT module is in the back.
Ah you mean the RH boot side panel. The BT module is mounted on to the amplifier module. The optional loop is simply used to loop out the BT module. You plug the loop out to the optical line instead of it plugging in to the BT module. It's a crude but functional way of testing the module.

It sounds like a diagnostic is needed though, especially if the fan and audio system is messing about.

Hiya is the diagnostic done through the obd port or is it a special piece of kit for testing this system.

Thanks for your advice

A diagnostic is done through the OBD2 port, but you need either a universal multi-system reader, or a dedicated LR multi-system reader.
Most garages should be able to read faults in all modules, or you can buy an LR reader for about £140.
