It's been a bad week.

A week or so ago I posted saying that the 300tdi 'M' reg had overheated.

I'd topped up with antifreeze and bled the coolant system and all seemed well.

The heater was running warm again and the coolant levels were holding steady.

However ... it's been so cold in the nights ( I know you know ) so at the start of last week it was really sluggish starting. The battery didn't look in great condition and it was the one that was on the car when I bought it in August so I presumed the battery was just weak ( plus the cold weather ).

By mid week last week the battery would not start the car and I was having to jump start first thing in a morning. Jump starting off another ( running car ) was no problem. Car turned over fast and started straight away. Car then started throughout rest of day with it's own ( old ) battery.

At the end of the week the car seemed to take longer to get going off a jump start so I went to get a new battery. Local shops wanted 90 quid for a new battery. I called in at the local car recycling depot ( er didn't they used to be called scrap yards ? ) to see what they had got. They had a 690cca battery that looked in good nick ( I know I know ). Anyway they said that if it wasn't any good then just bring it back and they would make sure I ended up with a good battery. It was 30 quid.

So I fitted the battery and there was not enough in it to start car. So their lad jumped the car by putting two batteries across it ( 24 volts ). I asked if that could damge my car and he said it was fine as they do that all the time. Later that day the car wouldn't start ... battery seemed feeble. I managed to get it jump started by a neighbour again and checked voltage across battery when running to check alternator. 14 volts.

Since Friday it won't start. I've had the battery on mains charge overnight and it shows full charge but it wont start car. Car turns over slowly.

This morning I had a local garage come and tow car away. He tried starting it on my drive with his booster pack but it again just turned over very slowly and wouldn't start. He has just phoned me and says that he started the car whilst towing and it started straight away. He says he thinks the starter may be 'tired' but there is no way of testing it so he doesn't want to fit a new one in case that's not it.

** Whilst typing he has just phoned me again to say that he tested the heater plugs and 2 were not working. He says he has tried to fit a new set but he can't get one of the ones that isn't working out. He says he is now going to try drilling it out. **

... but the heater plugs won't cause it to turn over very slowly will they ?

I did a search on here and found threads linking to Numax marine batteries for @ 65 quid.

How big a job is fitting the starter motor and do you think that may be it? Ebay seems to sell them new for about 75 quid. Any suggestions on where to get one from? Is a second hand one a good idea?

Sorry to be bombing you with probs guys.

Sweeeeeeeeeet Looooooooooooooooooooooooooooord

He has just phoned me back again and said that he can't get the heater plug out and he has to take the cylinder head off to take the cylinder head to a local 'specialist' so they can get it out. He says he has to take the cylinder head off and it will cost 300 quid for that plus the cost of this specialist getting it out and then I am still back to square one.

I've told him to leave it and I'll just go and get it back.

It is due it's MOT in January and I aint spending that sort of money having a cylinder head taken off to get a heater plug out and then find out it fails something nasty in January and needs scrapping.

Any comments/advice?

I need a brandy !

Er...did you ask him to start stripping your engine??

He'd phoned and said that he didn't really know why it was so sluggish to start. He said that it may be the starter motor but he had tested the heater plugs and two were not working. So he phoned to say that he would put a set of plugs in. He then phoned back and said that one had snapped and he was going to drill it out. He then phoned back to say he couldn't drill it out and he would have to take the cylinder head off and take it to a specialist to get it removed from the inside.

I've told him not to touch the engine and I'll have it back .. but I'll now have a car that wont start ( starter motor ) and has a broken off heater plug that is going to cost a fortune to get out.

Jesus mate! sounds like your being ripped!

Get the car back and get the head off and removed broken plug yourself.

I did mine last winter out in the street outside my house, cost me abour £20 for H gasket and £20 for glow plugs and a full days graft.

There are some good guides for replacing HG if you use search function or google.

Hi Colin, this is a perfect example of why more and more of us LR owners learn to do the work ourselves.

1. Glowplugs normally come out very easily, you just have to be careful with them

2. A Tdi 300 if in good order will start easily without any glowplugs at all. However they are better in cold weather with them - 3 working glowplugs would be better than none!!!!

3. Taking the head off without notifying you first is completely out of order and just shows huge incompetence to me.

4. This sounds like a rip-off so get your car back any way you can and work on it yourself. For the amount of money you would be paying this "mechanic" you could buy yourself some decent tools and do the job yourself - IT IS NOT COMPLICATED OR DIFFICULT.

If you do it and you stuff up, well so what. At least you're not paying someone else to stuff it up for you :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

TDI 300's are lovely to work on, with plenty of room and nice straightforward mechanicals.

Do-it-yourself, you know it makes sense.

Good luck

Cheers mate

I've got it back ... he's charged me 100 quid to fit 3 glowplugs and **** the other one up.

I'll learn how to work on it fella ... it's all a bit new at the moment. I'll get the starter motor sorted. It should start on the 3 like you say.

I'll sort out the 4th one at a later date.

sorry if anyones already mentioned this but had same sluggish starting prob a couple of weeks ago. checked battery and all ok, alternator charging fine but wouldn't start in mornings then fine rest of day, turned out to be poor earth between engine and chassis and battery and innerwing. easiest way to check is next time it won't start instead of connecting jumpleads to another car just connect 1 lead between battery earth and decent earth point on engine. (lifting eye works well), if car starts clean earths and all should be fine..

Could fit a permanent earth cable from battery to the block? If so what dia cable and where would be the best point on the block?

Cheers for this ...

Here's an extra bit of info which makes me cringe now you've said that, especially as it's cost me 100 quid today for that garage to fit 3 glowplugs ( which didn't need doing ) and he's screwed the 4th plug up.

The car started to struggle starting a week or so ago when the cold weather came. I originally suspected the battery. If you jumped it from another car or a 690cca battery that I took from the diesel outfield mower it started straight away and turned the starter motor aggressively. The reason I didn't put this battery on was because the terminals are the wrong way.

After a few days of this I thought I'd try to fit it anyway and see if I could make the car's leads stretch. I managed to get it on and the leads just reached if crossed over ... but it did strain the negative lead where it's insulation is stripped and it's pinned to the inner wing. I asked the garage if that could be a problem and he said no.

after i cleaned original earths, as an extra belt and braces precaution i chopped up an old lone jump lead (god knows where the other one went??) that is approx 10mm diameter added a couple of terminals and bolted it to the aircon pump mounting point on top of timing cover. Probably better place to bolt to but it was a quick, simple precaution.
