power steering pump replaced!

Thanks to 200tdiayre for supplying me with a 200tdi unit, which I told him would be the same as my 3.5 v8!

Oh, how wrong was i??

Well, kinda!

The pump itself is the same. The exterior portion of the driveshaft is slightly longer on a v8 fitment but not to the extent that it matters, because in both tdi and v8 formats the pulley flange is pressed well onto the shaft.

I was expecting a quick swap but it soon became apparent that the PCD of the pulley mounting bolts was much smaller on the tdi, indeed the tdi uses M6 bolts and the v8 M8.

At this point I should mention that a defender 200tdi pump has the same flange as my disco v8 but a disco tdi pump is different.

It turns out that due to the plentiful nature of disco tdi pumps a lot of defender owners perform this swap to save time/money finding a defender specific pump.

It did not take much effort, two hours and it was running, but I had to pull the flange off both pumps and then sweat the v8 flange onto the tdi pump.

I was careful to align the markings on the old pump shaft with the position of the flange on the new pump to make sure the flange was fitted at the correct position on the shaft.

This worked as the belts are exactly true when fitted to the engine :)

The fault with my old pump was the front bearing, this is kinda exposed and was absolutely shot to ****, to the extent that it fell apart when I removed the mudshield.

I have packed the mudshield with grease now in attempt to keep the mud at bay!

Anyway, there you go.

Tomorrow I may get some pics up of the beginnings of my onboard air upgrade, starting with a 9ltr fire extinguisher than I purchased last night.

The first challenge with that it to modify the bottle fitting to get it to accept a fitting that I can work with.

Cheers boys :)

^^
i fell foul of the flange fiasco on a 19j to 200tdi conversion in a 110.

tried to use the pump from the 19j as the pipework threads were different on the 200 pump, only to find the flanges are different, inc the shaft diameter as well as the pcd for the bolts!
ended up making a new flange. pita!

Hi I have been reading your and other comments. Good job. I now own defender but with 2.5 n/a. Bloody good engine. Slow yes but very reliable. Downside no power steering so the boss her indoors won't drive it now. I thought the 200 tdi disco was a straight swop 4 bolt type and look for a bracket that goes by the alternator to hold the pump. I am at mo looking at scrapyard for 200 tdi for the steering box, pump, reservoir etc. but not sure if it fit ? After reading your comment ??

Thanks everyone!

Verdict on seats is good, tbh after spending 3 hours in them you need to get out for a stretch but I am very pleased with them, I love the fact that they are sturdy hard plastic, no frills nothing to damage.

Would be excellent for your purpose, I did the full laning weekend and they weren't a problem; just as I say after a few hours you do need to get out!

Many happy returns fella.

When will you reveal more details of the onboard air system, looking at budget options myself

If you get sick of ****ing about with a fire extinguisher i have a proper air tank knocking about from when i used to fit Air Suspension which is made for the job. NPT fittings iirc so nice and easy.

those grinders are quite nice! you should pick up the larger batteries, they don't last to long in a grinder!

its my dads, he's ebaying it but yeah its been decent for him.

he's recently changed over to Li-Ion batteries, SO much better than cads or nims, and smaller form factor.

im more of an air guy being workshop based whereas he likes his DIY more :p

Finally cured the GPS problems that have been plagueing me, the GPS unit used to be on the roof running through a 3m USB extension cable, this was causing the trouble all along I think, upgraded to the latest driver and plugged direct into the laptop = great GPS lock.

Mounting the dongle involved sticking a washer to the dashboard with double sided tape for the dongle to magnet itself onto.

Noice :)

Removing the rubber joint from the lower steering column, part of my quest to rid the steering system of play, of which this was a major contributor.

Plus, who needs rubber **** when there should be metal there?!

Tightened the steering box progressively until it went notchy and then backed off a little, remove this Cush joint and reset the drag link and I think we'll be in business.

Noice :)
