So has mine had a thermostat mod or not?

I 've bought a new expansion tank and cap to fit along with the PRT kit already butchered an old thermostat i had laying about that I changed out when I bought the freelander just about to lift the head off tomorrow(Sunday) to see what damage the belt jumping at start up did to it suspect its got more than a few valves bent but got a scrap head off the old boys Rover 75 for valves . Got the MLS head gasket and new head bolts not bothered with the upgraded ladder rack in the sump as having read numerous sites regarding the K series engines the consensus seems to be its not really warranted. I'll take pictures of the damage when I get the head off
 
Not yet always check the water before I set off anywhere its getting to the point the bonnet hinges are going to wear out but I may do just as piece of mind if it ever runs again:confused:

Driving a freelander can and does make you paranoid lifting the bonnet before starting not turning the radio up too loud and what was that noise you just heard as you drive along and then spend the rest of the journey listening for it again along with the 20 mins when you arrive under the bonnet and under the car just making sure its not going to throw bits of its self all over the tarmac on the way home:eek::eek:
 
I never fitted the "upgraded" oil rail neither :)

it works ok without it IMHO



i know what yer mean about the bonnet hinges, mine are the same.
 
So how do I spot whether it's had a thermostat mod and any HG change?

Hi Thanks for that , I just got it out the bag held it up and it seemed to make sense straight away where it would fit but being a Freelander its always better to check and ask. These things are never easy to work on something always crops up to spoil the party guess its just the fun of owning a Freelander.
 
Thanks for those pics but for the life of me I can't make sense of that hg check pic, spent an hour looking for something similar on my engine!

i didn't mention the number iirc just stated the grey prt is the one to use.

the cream one had issues, the spring on the bypass was too hard and the stat itself opened at a higher temp.

the grey has a weaker spring and the stat opens at 82 degrees which is much kinder to your engine ;)

So, now I'm the proud owner of a PEL500150 but after a brief chat to a LR specialist he assures me that my reg number already shows LR thermo mods have already been done on my vehicle. Mmmm, now I'm confused, it doesnt take a lot!

Anyway, I'm thinking this may be a factory mod from new on the late 2000's that the vehicle has? So was that any good and is there any advantage in sticking this newer mod in?
 
It's a late 2000 and is just on the borderline with the pre2001's so it's a 2001 onwards if that makes sense. It has the clear front indicators. I've had minor issues with parts when people have assumed it's a pre2001 model ie exhaust etc.
 
Hmm the parts guy should be right but I've concerns.
You have been given a lot of info about this did you check to see if one is already there?

Re the checking, I've gone on the opinion on my photo on the first page of this thread. As well as a local mechanic taking a quick look and saying that everything looks standard with no mods. Maybe the thermo mod for post 2000 vehicles onwards looked exactly like pre2000?
