So has mine had a thermostat mod or not?

I have't got a dog though :(. So I'd just have to settle for the BJ.

That's the reason I don't live darn sarf, oop nurth is a much better place to be for a small but international business like mine :D! Everything is cheaper, stupidly cheaper.

most likely they didnt used to like approving skimming at one time ,though most do ,but also the whole head can move once the original tension has been disturbed ,that doesnt happen on every over heat but depends on temp head reached which isnt easy to know apart from using the amount of warpage as a guide ,each head is different in its tolerance .but once tension has relaxed head is very prone to move again however good a job you do of fitting it

that's not bodeing well for mine then :(

why ? the fact its been overheated doesnt mean its necessarily reached relaxed stage ,its just a risk that time will tell

i caught it before it got too hot, but i did have it skimmed and pressure tested.

it seems to be ok for the last 15k miles so i can't see it's state changing now, touch wood ;)

i'm not as versed in these matters as you, but i do a lot of reading afore doing stuff to my motor.
much of this is conflicting and, at best, confusing

it is and theres a few in the trade dont understand as much as some ammateurs ,when you machine and rebuild which are often two seperate disciplines a lot of engines you get to see what really happens with all the different theories, especially lr warranty units as they were generally not worn out old motors in which faults were an accumlination of many factors ie even a perfect engine head gasket has a finite life ,you can even see it with ali gearboxes and t/boxes that had been in vehicle fires even though not that close to be able to see effects but all the pressed in parts like bearing races etc are loose

ah the heat affects more than i was led to believe, but this would only occur if it got really hot. i don't think mine did.

i've not seen anything along these lines and will read up more.
cheers JM

One of the last owners overheated mine enough to melt the cambelt cover a bit around the exhaust cam sprocket :(. Only time will tell.

Oh wait no I'm putting a turbo injun in it anyway, hmnyah :D!

do you not think that would be a step too far

it weren't designed to do that

buy a disco or fender and feck about with that, they are more versatile and accept change readily with the range of stuff that can be fitted to them.

i love my freelander but it will never be a hotrod or rock crawler, it is what it is and does that admirably :)

I don't think that fitting the rover 1.8T will be a real problem, can't bolt a turbo onto a standard K though. I've already talked to one of the leading remappers about it and he thinks it'd be fine as long as the cooling was sorted. It's not to make it a hot rod, just give it a bit more torque to make it a lovely cruiser but some extra bite oft road :). The transmission should take it as long as I'm not a prat on the clutch, but I may rebuild the gearbox with uprated bearings anyway just to be sure. I'm still researching it :).

I looked into it myself a while back, it's not the gearbox that worried me.

the whole drive train starts to look flimsy when any real big power goes through it.
