Couldn't have said it better myself !!!!!

Winter tyres come into there own below 7°C, so t doesn't have to be ice or snow, it doesn't even have to be rain !!

Non winter tyres go harder the lower the temp, so they just grip less in all circumstances, at lower temps.

One of the reasons that the UK grinds to a halt in winter is because you're all slipping around like Torville & Dean - Winter tyres would just stop that dead.

But I can see I'm wasting my time with most of you.....................................

your not ! your idea is maybe right, but the british public even if they all had winter tyres on would still get a grid lock, yesterday was at 12c, a good make and pattern and his disco would get him anywhere! until he finds a BWM trying to get to ASDA!

Just to throw my tuppence worth in.
Just got a Disco 2 so winter tyres may have to wait.
However, my daughter stays just north of Aberdeen and has a full set of winter tyres for her Chevrolet Captiva 2wd. absolutely swears by them.
Her fiancée is a self employed courier with DHL with a Citroen Nemo van and also has a full set of winter tyres. He travels all over the North-East of Scotland every day and says without winter tyres he would not feel very safe at times.
As said already, down to personal choice.

Her fiance isn't Chris Curtis is it?

I've never "needed" winter tyres but using them is better. For example it is possible to dig with your hands but I'd damn sure use a shovel to dig my landy. Would you consider it "cool" or matcho to dig yourself out a pit with your bare hands. I assume you don't have break down or a spare wheel.

Sorry, I'm not going to get evangelistic about this like Dave, if I felt the need to have winter tyres I would.

I've been driving cars, trucks, bikes since the 1960's and have never felt the need to have anything better than a good set of tyres in winter, not once, and that includes a couple of winter trips to Sweden with new chassis-cab trucks. Also don't forget that for the UK at least, winter rated tyres are a relatively new phenomenon.

I do have breakdown cover and TWO spare wheels for the Discovery for when we go into Europe.

Well well well.
Its getting heated in here :D Alot of good arguments for and against winter tyres in this thread.
And at the minute im no better of in making the right decision but i suppose it comes down to personal choice.
I totally understand the winter tyre are for temps below 7C rather than snow, wet, dry etc,But i do need some A/T's for normal driving(for sakes of argument above 7C:p )

So i think im going get so,me Cooper discoverer st maxx and then if i stuggle in the bad weather then next year i will save up for some winter tyres.

Thanks for everyone opinions :D

Only thing that will stop you is the snow depth

how many times do you go off road? and what are the conditions? ie farmer or adrenalin junky at the thought of going off tarmac, i don't really go off road, mine is more for Towing (diggers etc) as a weight thing, oh and my dog and when i go biking! so 98% tarmac, i aint into getting it **** up pay and play, ive done all that sort of thing in my 20's, and got paid for it, on a dumper or digger etc, so my tyres are there for safety and the disco i will say will go anywhere i want to go! a lot of it is down to driver ability!

Ps most of the hill farmers up here who have fenders don't start swapping tyres in winter! most standard fenders, standard tyres, french men would strike at any excuse anyhow!
