It's a pulley that you put your winch cable through to double it up thus doubling the pulling capability but halving the retrieval speed. Works like a block and tackle.

If you do decide to buy a snatch block. Make sure it is of a sufficient rating both in load capacity and for cable diameter of your winch and winch rope. If you get it wrong when your winch cable is at twice its pulling capacity I gurantee it WILL hurt if it hits you.

looks like i might invest in one..is a 10 ton one sufficient?

Yes. I am taking it that your winch cable is wire and is 9mm-11mm thick. If so you need to make sure the diameter of the pulley wheel is a minimum of 3" (75mm) to prevent damage to your cable when pulling around it. You will also need similar rated strops and shackles if you intend to use it to change your winching angle by attaching to trees or other solid objects as griff has mentioned.

A snatch block is so handy! I used mine a couple of weeks ago in anger after a couple of members got stuck. A shogun (Ryder) got himself stuck at santa pod and the 88 (spyderman) couldn't get him out. I drove up and winched out ryder. The lane was so slippery and I was on road tyres I couldnt get near him so we spend ages winching him back down the lane and his rear tow point decided to part with its mounts Bloody Jap Crap! So I had to pull his front end at 90 degrees to turn him around out of the ruts. A very successful recovery that would have been made very difficult without a snatch block.
Got home at 11.30 pm very very muddy lots of laughs as i fell into a rarther deep hole! And I thought I was prepared with welly boots! Jai
