Getting a lift in a friend's TD4 and when we got to my house there was a bit of smoke coming out from under the bonnet so we popped it up and had a look. Seemed to be coming from under and behind the right hand side of the engine but we couldn't see anything. Not thick smoke, just a little bit. Definitely smoke, not steam.

Its dark and raining so we gave up for now. Any ideas what to look for?

Somewhere down there->

I wouldn't think fbh, hippo if the smoke is def coming from that area.

The only thing thereabouts I can think of is the corrugated pipe going to the EGR.

We need more info, nick.

With engine running shine a torch into the darkness there and see if you can tell us where any smoke is coming from.

Also what colour of smoke?
What smell?

Had a look with a torch and it seems to be coming from where the red arrow is. It was fairly thin so not easy to trace. There's an ali housing on the end of the side of the engine, seemed to be under that but hard to tell. Smelt a bit acrid. Pretty strong smell, not one I recognised.

Can't think off-hand what part the alumin housing is - but immediately below it is the water-jacket cooler for the EGR piping.

Sorry can't help more at the moment - but someone more clever than me will surely be along in a short while. :)
