Smokey on tickover.

Hi all,
My series V8 smokes on tick over, after about 30 seconds to a minute of pulling up. It doesn't smoke when im driving, well I cant see any.
Would I be right in thinking its probably worn valve guides, as it doesn't have any oil seals, as its the early heads.
I have rebuilt it with all new rings, bearings, cams, followers, rockers, shafts, etc.
Other than a bit of smoke on tick over, which is just annoying really, and a bit embarrassing, it's ace.

Would u not have looked at the valve guides? valve stem seals maybe or worn cylinder bores maybe but without a crystal ball we can guess all day,

what is coming out of the oil filler with a hot engine? is crankcase breather clear?

what did you do to the bores,the inlet valves have rubber washers that act as seals

Both the 3.5 and 3.9 engine's inlet and exhaust valves have oil seals that's 8 in total, so what engine size do you have fitted to your series?

Hi James
I just honed the bores as they appeared to be in good condition, and within the correct measurements, as per the manual. I was under the impression that the early P6 heads didn't have any seals at all, which is what my heads are off.

I did check the valves when rebuilding, and I did notice there was a slight play in one, but thought oh well, might smoke a bit, however saying that, I didn't do any technical measurements on them all, just gut feeling

Maybe I've answered my own question.

Would you tend to only get this on tick over though, and when first started, although it appears to be fine on first start up.

not the earlier engines they just had a rubber washer type on inlet nothing on exhaust

it could depend on how good your honing is a light hone wont have a good enough surface for rings to run in on ,have you given the engine any work, erc7865 are used on inlets upto 94 on landy v8s and i presume others,

Way before my time then, I can only go back to 1986/87 model RRc with carb or later efi, then the disco1 efi, but then I'm only referring to what is stated in my parts books .

they were used on al lr v8s till 94 ish, after that washer was replaced valves stem caps on all valves

My '89 RRC had the washer type seals, as previously stated on the inlet valves only. I can confirm that they were/are ****e and a waste of time and rubber. I got a later set of heads when I rebuilt the engine purely for the later valve seals. This proved much cheaper than having my old heads machined to take the newer type seals, though that is an option.
