Smokes on cold start td4

Hi everyone very new here! I've got a 56 plate hse td4 and it always smokes in a morning for 30 seconds then doesn't smoke all day when warm through all the rev range... also for 5 seconds on first cold start it will sound abit jumpy on tick over when smoking! Any ideas please? I changed the crank breather and valve it was very black so old owner must have not changed it if ever ... I'm guessing it's oil leaking or fuel not sure????

both of mine had the same problem and a set of recon injectors cured it, the diesel specialist company said 100.000 miles is about the maximum milage for these injectors before they need replacing

Oh right I see! Yeah I think I looked other day and the injectors new were £180 each hahaha! Alot of people fix the smoke problems with new glow plugs but can glow plugs be bad even if the glow plug light goes off the dash fairly quickly?

The glow plug light is there to request you wait to start, and nothing to do with the time the plugs are active, which is a lot longer than would appear.

Hi,

Glow plug will only help you to start faster when it freezing.

You can’t fix smoke problem by changing the glow plugs on the freelander td4.

You can test the glow plug with a simple tester, but injectors, hp pump, fuel hoses, turbo hoses … are more likely to cause smoke at starting

In my freelander TD4 the injectors where changed at 50k miles, and the hp pump at 100k miles. Don’t expect the injectors or the hp pump to last till the engine died…

I've only had the car 1 month and already started changing stuff. I wouldn't expect anything to last until it died.

Think you should read your manual. The glow plugs come on until the engine is warm enough to not need them. They are not just there to make sure it starts when it’s really cold. Also, by the time you have stripped the engine enough to test individual glow plugs you may as well fit new ones they don’t last long.

Unfortunately with a second hand vehicle, you're at the mercy of previous owners.
If they can't be bothered to sort an issue, then a subsequent owner will have to, or just ignore it.
If it's only on starting from cold, I'd ignore it myself.

Yup just changed the glow plugs and from completely cold zero smoke... I drove my mondeo to collect the plugs just to make sure it was a fully cold start
