2005 4.4 v8 vogue petrol.

Our range rover just went away on a tow truck. Firstly noticed smoke on acceleration then as you were coasting in drive approaching junctions etc the engine started making a whine almost like a supercharger sound.

Pulled over and inspected upon revving the engine gently as the revs fell it made the whine briefly. Upon attempting to move to a safer place the car set off but promptly whined and died, restarted it and made it a few yards and died again. attempted restart and it just made a horrible deep whine. by then It was in a place that was a bit safer to be broken down. Didn't attempt to start again as it sounded like it had seized.

On arrival of the recovery truck the guy started the car and drove it on the truck with no issue or noise. its now on its way back to the dealers we bought it from.

Any idea what could have happened?

I don't know the answer to your question, but the fact the recovery driver later started it and there was no issues or noise says to me it's not "too major" of an issue. Hope it gets sorted cheaply :)

We are only 9 days into ownership so hopefully the dealer is going to sort it!

Remembered that it didn't start first time this morning as well.

The dealer still has the car and is saying that is the water pump failed after a hose split but this seems like a bit of a tall tale to me.

If a hose split my concern would be the engine heat seizing rather than the pump but if you find my thread about is my engine dead it was my water pump that made horrible noises on my 4.4 petrol. Did you notice the temperature gauge.?
If the pump seized I guess it could stall the engine via the drive belt.
If you are keeping it then I would check to see if the allcomms works with your model as without diagnostics the l322 is a painful expensive hobby

Holidaychicken, I will check your thread out thank you.

The temp gauge remained in the middle all the time the vehicle didn't overheat unless the gauge is faulty.

I said to the wife right from the beginning that if she got this range rover then we had to get a diagnostics tool I currently like the look of the britpart one.

We shall see what today brings from the dealer.

As far as diagnostics you need to be able to clear faults as well as read them , check the RSW solutions allcomms site to make sure it covers your vehicle, have a search on here regarding diagnostic tools but the allcomms is the best value in my opinion.

If you are lucky the water pump is shot and the smoke and difficult starting is something simple.

The dealer is now stating that the one or both of the head gaskets has gone and has sent an estimate which he wants us to pay before starting work despite only having the car 9 days before it went kaput.

The estimate comes to around 650 but dose not include coolant, oil or new head bolts. The little confidence I had in the dealer is rapidly getting smaller.
Notice how its an estimate not a quote.

Go to citizens advice. I believe when you buy a car thew engine and gearbox is covered by some consumer act for 6 months.

Not good news but CAB is good start, there is something about if a vehicle fails within a certain period of time the faults are considered to have been present at the point of sale.
Does the dealer seem like its been there a while as some of them operate on a basis of rip off as many people as possible and then change the company name and start again.
Hopefully it wont get to small claims court stage as my friend had an issue with a VW gold gearbox failing soon after he purchased it and eventually it was sorted after more than a year and by going to court.
Have a good google

The dealer has been going 2 years. At the minute I am more worried in the quality of the work that will be done by them but we will see what tomorrow brings. I reckon he already has the new water pump on it.

One or both ? Either one or both have gone. How is he diagnosing a HGF ? Guesswork ? If one has gone, its best to replace both together. The 'estimate' sounds light at £50 an hour that makes it 10 hours work to strip and rebuild.. yes it can be done if you're hauling ass doing it. Saint V8 may manage it in 10 hours and maybe a few other experienced people that have pulled head before and all bolts come out cleanly.. and then the heads need to be sent of to be machined. I would guess that any garage quoting to do HGF on a V8 less than a grand is blowing smoke up your ass.

Besides if you have only had the car 9 days, then duke it out with him.. or set wammers on him.

He may also be making it up to try and get more cash out of you or when you complain he then meets you half way and still ends up in pocket.
Reading the advice above, I wouldn't be agreeing to pay for anything
