L322 Black smoke on kickdown

I had an egr fault code come up on my 2009 3.6 tdv8 l322 but the code stayed off after clearing it. Then it started going into limp mode every now and then with some black smoke so I've now blanked them off. Now it's going into limp mode whenever I kickdown with a massive cloud of black smoke. Dosnt seem to have lost any power though which is strange.so I don't think it the turbos. I've checked the top intercooler hoses for splits but the only thing I could find is a worn patch on the inside of the bend on the left hose. Like the rubber is alot thinner there. So I've ordered some new top hoses anyway just in case but I'm not certain it's that. Would it kick out black smoke if the bottom hoses had a split.not seen much about the bottom hoses perishing on any forums and its not so easy to check those hoses. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I've taken out the map sensors and there's no oil or soot on either so again,I don't think it's the turbos. I would have thought if either turbo was gone or on its way out there would be some residue on one of the map's. It's a pain when a dtc could mean so many different things. I've changed the top hose that looked a bit suspect and took it out for a drive, booted it a bit with kickdown. a big plume of smoke and when I got up to 50mph limp mode again. It dosnt go in to limp around town if I kick it. Just smoke so seems to happen under load and at speed.

It would be a good idea to remove your email address unless you want to invite the spammers.

You need to specify what engine, the year and model of the vehicle.
If one MAF is reading low, I would say that is the place to start. Split manifolds and hoses are not uncommon.

I didn't realise it made my email my profile name🤦‍♂️can't change it til March 20th so I'll have to do it then. Thanks for the heads up mate.i stated the vehicle details in the original thread too. 3.6 tdv8 2009 l322. I didn't put that it's a vogue se though. Where would I start with the MAF readings. I've just had the top of again and one of the hex screws on the egr blank plate,the exhaust plate, has snapped off.just the head of the screw/bolt.
Spoke to the fella that did the blanking and he said it was fine when he fitted them. Do you think that could be the cause? It is only one bank that's reading wrong so if the bolt has snapped off it'll be leaking pressure on the exhaust so losing pressure for the turbo when under load wouldn't it?? I'm no mechanic so I'm just guessing here.
 
The low MAF reading would, in my opinion, indicate a possible air leak in the inlet pipe work down stream of the MAF. As for your EGR leak, it might be contributing but I think it would have to be a big leak to make that much difference but I could well be wrong.

MAF bank 2 I need to check from then.
The snapped hex on the blank plate will have a bit poking out once I take the plate off so hopefully I can either get a grip on it and twist it out or I could put a small nut on it an spot weld it. Then should be able to twist it out that way.
I'll have a go at the weekend.
I'll get on the MAF thing tomorrow and let you know how it goes.
 
I found mine was like this and fixed it with Q-bond. My wife's Discovery 4 has just done the same thing but that manifold split across the top and it's a flimsy flat piece so I'm currently in the process of replacing it. It's a PITA job on the SDV6!

Where did you connect the air line to the engine mate? I see the gauge but couldn't see where it went in?
 
It's not my car, they took off a boost hose and plugged it up, you can see it by just getting someone to rev the car. Mine had a big soot stain on the underside of the engine cover which was the giveaway on my car

I'm just going to get the cover off and have a look on that and get it revving and see if I can hear anything. Good shout mate👍
 
Spray some bubbles on it and you'll soon find your leak if you have one.

Boost hoses split too, I think I had a small leak on mine before it fully let go but when it did it was under the anti abrasion sleeving so it wasn't obvious and I drove it 9 hours through France manual shifting to keep the revs up and boost low to get home. I could hear that diesel v8 in my sleep after that drive! Found the issue the next day and realise I had enough stuff to have effected a temp repair while I was over there! Live and learn eh?

Took the cover off and no real signs of soot or leakages anywhere. Can't hear any hissing sounds either. Had a bit of oil residue around the left intercooler hose as it goes into the manafold but I've wiped it and sprayed and no bubbles anywhere. So I've cleaned the MAP sensors and swapped them over,cleaned the maf sensors too but they seemed in good condition. Now my MAF readings are almost the same and seem good. My boost pressure actuators are almost the same and seem good. No split hoses either.the 2 top ones have been changed. The only thing I can think of is the dodgy egr blank plate on the exhaust end. Not sure you read further up the thread but one of the hex screw heads has snapped off so the egr blank is only held on with 1 hex screw. I don't even know how it's sheared off as the fella who did the blank said it was fine when he fitted it. So next step will be to take all the parts I need off so I can get to the screw and try and get it out and fit a new screw. I can see it but can't get to it. I only blanked it as I had the egr fault code come up with some black smoke.so got them blanked and now the p023-22 code has appeared. Another fella on here said the broken screw shouldn't be the cause unless it's a big leak. I'm hoping it is the cause as the next steps will start costing more and more.

The egr valve/s only let exhaust gas into the air intake system. It's designed to lower emissions by burning unburnt gazes coming out of the engine. 🤔
Mine will smoke under heavy acceleration, Grey in color but not black. (although a different engine and programmed).
What are your fuel pressure like on the live data?
If you can record the fuel rail pressures while driving, particularly when is gunning black smoke, this may give an indication also? 🤔

I'll try today and get back to you mate. Going to put some egr cleaner through it today also as the p023d code can get thrown up by a blocked egr apparently which would make sense.
