Having decided, with yo help, that the V6 Freebie is a waste and a continious drain of money (I have spent 4K on garage bills in the last year); I thort I wud ask yu guys wot yu reckon to those above....
I need a car that has a bit of poke, can take a couple of canoes on the roof and (preferably) has 4wd for use in winter - Nothing exciting.

I seem to have narrowed it down to one of the above.

Wot are your thoughts - preferably useful ones? Unfortunately a "real" Landrover is out because (a) the boss dont like them - "too big" and (b) I dont really do off-road - just very muddy track in winter.

one thing I forgot to mention - it needs to be reliable - I cant afford not to be able to "jump in and drive" - I dont want massive garage bills again.

If yu got any betta suggestions (about cars) - i'm listening

Have a read of this months Top Gear, they have just finnished a year with the TDi 4x4 Skoda Estate and it cost just £260 ish for servicing and other consumable items during that year.

They never got worse than 41 MPG, the load carrying was great and the 4x4 faultless and very good off road, they even agreed the interior which took a hammering still looks as good as new. It also comes as standard with roof bars so you can fit them canoe's you have.

The Forrester is Thirsty (Very) i have ran one for a few days while the Impreza was having work done and it made my WRX seem frugal. Build quality is good but resale is scary because its a Subaru 4x4.

The Golf for me would be too small for your needs, they are heavy and people tend to stay away from the 4motion due to economy and fear( 4x4 system), this will reflect any resale for you in the future, they are quite decent on the ruff stuff to a limit.

For what you have described your needs are, the Skoda would be my choice, great reliabilty cheap to buy and inexpensive to run.

Hi Zip, quite agree with you about the Forester costs and stuff about the Golf, but isn't Skoda mainly VW bits eg is the fwd the same as on the Golf?

Yes you are right they share the same parts but based on buy price (New or Used), running costs and residual value the Skoda is the winner.
The Golf 4motions always take an age to shift 2nd hand as opposed to a 2wd Golf, people unless after one in particular will always plump for 2wd as they perceive a 4X4 Golf must drink like Oliver Reed compared to a 2wd car.

Also the dealers when used are very very good i only hear good comments where as VW dealers still seem to treat the customer as a nuisance rather than a client. Considering it is a Golf underneath the servicing costs are way better for the Skoda.

I have always been one of the people who have said '' But its a Skoda'':( until i drove an Octavia RS and was to say impressed, based on the price the guy who i knew had paid for it, the build quality, performance and over 3 years he had no failures at all, it was a winner.

Forget all of them. My other car is a Leon TDi FR which is 170 BHP TDi. Never drove a car like it before. Goes like stink and leaves most so called petrol hot hatches standing. Also it does 40 + mpg

I dont need a car that "goes like stink" - I need to fulfill the top specs - if I need a car to wipe the floor with your Leon - I already got two;), but thanks for feedback y'all

The boss says she likes a 4wd - so wot about a Rav4, Nissan X-trail etc.

No not a Freelander TD4 - I cant be arsed with cracking chassis, heater matrix et al....

come on guys - yu gotta help me here - i'm going mad (sum mite say I already am!)

bein serious for once - there is no way I am getting another hippo after (in 1 year) I have had to replace propshaft/heater matrix/gearbox/thermostat and heat gasket (so far- possibly engine change) and had to have the chassis welded 'cos it has cracked - I mite be daft - but I aint a mug - once bitten...... None of the local LR peeps will touch the V6 - they just say "chuck the engine and fit a new one".
I know yu r advocating the TD4 but that dont stop poor chassis/heater matrix/prop design etc. The design is P*** poor. Sorry guys, but I have had enuf - I just askin yo help in finding a second option.
The only way I wud keep a Hippo is if I replaced the complete drive train (see V8 thread) - and as I have had proven (& Clutchdust has verified) the Chassis aint up to it.

I AM askin for help here.

If you, or anyone else on this forum can assure me that the probs I have had are unusual and just "bad luck" I will stick with the Freebie, but it seems that they are endemic to this model. Can you assure me that the probs I have had are unusual?

and the bad news? - group hug!

I had a Golf Mk 4 V6 4MOTION, Bora 4MOTIONs and razzed around in pals Audi TT's and Skoda hot jobs during my tenure as product specialist at Volkswagen UK.

My view is that SEAT drivers try too hard. The product is good though, but the suspension is too hard and 4 wheel drive isn't offered. A yellow Leon is like a Saxo on steroids.

Skoda is a good car, but the ladies just don't rate, regardless of reasoned argument, based on image.
Both vehicles aren't any better than the VW or Audi, just cheaper when new. Beware of owners of the lesser brands on a mission to sell them to the world.

The Goof V6 is a smashing motor, much more satisfying and exclusive than the 1.8T. I know that the dealers are equally as average as Skoda, but better than SEAT - so why not take it to a good indy garage?

Fuel economy - I always managed to get about 28 mpg out of my 204 bhp VR6's and 32 out of 180 bhp 1.8T's.

However the Bora is quite a Q car, and one that I really developed a liking for. The Mrs hated it initially - 'No image, what is it etc etc.' But after 2 Bora V6's she was bereft when production stopped. They tend to be a little rarer than the Golf, but also a little cheaper. But don't bother with slippy leather seats, Xenons and 17" wheels, they actually detract from the both Golf and Bora V6 package.

Now watch the SEAT and Skoda advocates come out fighting...
