silver on black plates (pre-1975 manufacture)

I've just asked a local garage if they could provide me with some silver on black plates for my 1969 2A. They've said their supplier doesn't do the silver on black plates. Where do I need to go to get some made up? Is this garage a one-off? They've told me to look online for "show plates"..
 
e-bay, but read the descriptions carefully. Some are plastic with the numbers on the reverse - look nice but are bendy, some are pressed aluminum which I prefer. Check the sizes carefully too, especially if you only have 7 figs. Some of the old sizes wont take more than 6 of the full size letters/numbers. Mine were really high quality, pressed and came in a couple of days for around £20 the pair. Best of all our local supermarket car park can't recognise them!
 
There are lots of plate styles in the page you linked to fatrover. Which style did you order? I think Style 1 Pressed Black with Brushed Aluminium Digits looks alright. Last time I ordered plates you had to show the V5.. o_O
 
I got the style 1....will post a few pics later so you can see, nice raised pressed metal, just the job!

Didn’t need to send v5 either!

My 69 car has plastic raised letters which were correct in 69. They look good as well. Got them from Birmingham but can't remember company

They should be the plastic letters for that era.
Then again so should mine but they are pressed ally.
Not had any comebacks but there is a risk if you come across a bobby with an IQ.

Oh, the council owned nazi in a camera car can’t recognise them either. I often forget I’m not in my bus and chug past one in a bus lane.
Many of the police cameras can read them but it cost them millions to upgrade their software.

If you are anywhere near Downham Market go to A T Johnson's. Got mine there just need to show your V5.
 
I was about to correct you, but I'm now in the process of eating my about-to-be-typed words as it looks like the rules have changed. Page 11 of the attached seems to say that "historic vehciles" can use silver on black so long as you have applied to the DVLA. This is news to me but that's what it seems to say, so "fill yer boots..."

"Traditional number plates for vehicles made before 1 January 1973 Vehicles made before 1 January 1973 may display traditional ‘black and white’ number plates (for example, white, silver or grey characters on a black plate). From April 2019 vehicles manufactured before 1 January 1979 are also able to display traditional ‘black and white’ number plates. You must: • have applied to DVLA • be registered within the ‘historic vehicles’ tax class. The 40-year exemption date rolls forward automatically each year on 1 April."
News to me as well when did this happen?
 
Agreed, I didn't know that leaflet existed unitl I found it in response to this post. Looks like April just gone so we are only in the 2nd month. They slipped that out quietly.
