Hi, can anyone offer me any advice on this.
My brake pads on the front of my 03 plate TD4 were getting quite worn so I changed them my self about 3 weeks ago. i've done them before on other cars i've owned. All seemed to go smoothly apart from a little spilt brake fluid when i wound the piston in, until today.
Maybe its not a problem but i noticed after the car hadn't been driven for a day or two a bit of surface rust on the disks as they do, problem is now i've taken it out for 5 or 6 mile drive today the rust has worn off some of the disk but some still has surface rust on. This is the same on both front disks. this made me think there not wearing evenly? Is this anything to worry about or will the new pads just bed into the shape of the disks in a few more hundred miles??

I'll apologise for him, he's a colonial and doesn't always use English.

He means, did you clean the faces of your discs?

Mind you I don't agree with him, having had a disc or two fail in the past I work on the basis that if you're not certain, fit new discs.

Either your discs are slightly warped so you will not get full braking effect or the pads are not square to the disc, piston not straight in the caliper. The pattern of rust will tell you which.

Treat yourself to a new pair of discs, they're not expensive.

Some where in the book for rotors they should give you a minimum thickness:rulez: so you can reface them . Was the disc failure a material or mechanical (like it rusted apart) warped rotors will decrease your braking by at least 50%
 
you should allways replace disc and pads and if fluid comes out caliper to,the parts are cheap enough less than £20 for pads and £20 each for discs,if you have to do emergency stop your car isnt likely to stop square with discs with different friction surfaces
 
Hummm, No unfortunately i didn't think to do anything as intelligent as cleaning the disks. They didn't appear to be that worn but maybe i should invest in some new ones.
Yes the rust is all the way round just on the inner and outer, the section in the middle is fine i guess this is where the pads are making contact. The shiney bit in the middle where the pad is making contact seems slightly narrower on the drivers side. Car doesn't pull under heavy braking though and still seems to stop well, owww, brakes squeak slightly too now..
 
Sorry, didn't make it clear, fluid just over flowed from reservoir when i wound calliper back in, not from calliper it self.

Only very very slightly warped discs can be refaced. Freelander discs are so cheap that it would be daft to even think about it, & if his problem is due to uneven wear or grooves then even assuming refacing would clean them up & still leave plenty of thickness it just wouldn't be worth it.

if the discs aren't badly worn or scored the pads just need time to bed in.........
