OK, I've found a P38 DSE which I like, but cannot decide whether to buy it or not.

Good points: pretty much everything seems to work, EAS compressors + air suspension bags replaced in last 18 months and work very well, has 4 nearly-new Pirelli Scorpion tyres on 18" hurricane alloys, interior is really nice (unmarked black leather), harmon kardon stereo with original headunit (that currently needs coding), heated seats (rare on non-HSE cars, not sure they work though - didn't get very warm on the test drive), tinted windows, year 2000 light upgrade and a removable 'swan neck' tow bar (no electrics). 3 owners from new, a few months tax and MOT until next March I think.

Bad points: few bumps and scrapes on bodywork (which don't bother me as I'll be greenlaning in it), headunit doesn't work but is getting power, hopefully just needs a code (easy to get?), book symbol on HEVAC although that all seems to work and I know the air con needs a regas, so hopefully that is all it is. Biggest problem is a diesel leak from the injector pump - have been quoted £400 for a rebuild (see this thread for details of the leak if interested: http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f10/p38-dse-leaking-diesel-hevac-fault-158744-3.html) by a local specialist.

Car has done 155,000 miles, was a Land Rover demonstrator, then first proper owner had it up to 60k miles with FSH, his mate bought it off him and has had it last 10 years and 100k miles and has home serviced it - he seems to know what he was talking about mechanically on the phone, and it runs well.

I have been quoted £400 to rebuild the diesel pump with new seals, car was advertised for £2,700, haggled to £2,500 but having found this fault dealer has offered it to me for £2,250 with no warranty or guarantees.

So, what ya reckon Landyzone 'massive' (innit) - worth a punt or walk away? Thing with P38's is they all have faults - if this is the only major fault with the car, my feeling is it is worth a buy, but would appreciate suggestions!

Thanks.

Thoguht of one more 'fault' - when the drivers window is wound down, it makes a horrendous bang when you shut the door! Goes up and down fine and no noises when you shut the door with the window up, so not sure what that is all about.

Ive had the same problem its the rubbers in the window guide inside the door that are ether missing or come off and are laid in the bottom of the door
when the windows up its held by the rubbers you can see when its down the glass s very loosly held by the metal of the guide
Wind the window down and give it a wiggle should make the same noise
Easy fix just take the door card off and with a little luck you'll find the rubber in the bottom of the door

Does the 400 for fip refurb include removal and refit?
If yes, go for it. Your risks are then no worse than any other 10+ year old 'everything works' at purchase p38.

Cheers gfromleeds, good to know it should be an easy fix!

£400 is just the refurb - removal and refit is extra, so prob £550-£600 all told I guess?

could get a nice classic for that m8, or at least a p38 on coils!

I know but I really like P38's and have had a Classic! Plus I wouldn't want a P38 on coils, for me the air suspension is one of the best bits!! :)

Check the logbook for stereo code first, or failing that whip the headunit out...it's sometimes written on it if ur lucky and it's been out before.
Failing that ring your local landy dealer for the code, they should give you the stereo unlock code...iirc they need either a serial number on the stereo or can be done from VIN number, hopefully someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Stratstone gave me my stereo pin and EKA code with no charge.

Thanks JD, good to know!

If not, can any aftermarket h/u run with the Harmon Kardon speakers? As I'd quite like to be able to play my iPod through the system and make use of the existing speakers and amps if they're half decent anyway!!

I forgot - it had a new radiator last year too apparently!

You know what, I think I might go for it...

If its a dealer then irrespective of what he says you have 6 months guarantee, obviously not wear and tear..so if he's gonna let you have it for 2250 then i'd keep quiet and buy it if thats what you want. The ''no guarantee or warranty'' are meaningless words.

Have you got anything to back that up? Not being obtuse, but if puts on the receipt "No warranty or guarantee" I can't see me having much luck in a small claims court saying "hey I thought it came with a warranty" can you??

The Bacon muncher is correct.

If he is a trader he is obliged by law to warranty his goods.

Thanks storm99, worth bearing in mind. I have offered him a cheeky £2k, if he doesn't accept that (which I very much doubt he will!) I'm walking away.

Reading those regulations, surely if he sells it with a known fault then he would not be obliged to then fix that fault?

I presume you are not into fixing things yourself. I once had a VW T25 diesel and it had a leaky inj pump. I didnt adjust the pump timing but did manage to replace the seals for a few quid. Is it not worth giving it a bash yourself? Even with this prob, it sounds a good deal.
