Think id walk away with that one.. whos to say you get it down the road & find something else wrong..? or even after a month or so. Id keep on searching, ive been looking earlier, & theres quite a few available... around the 2200 mark.

Yeah I've decided to give it a miss.

In fact, this whol scenario has made me think twice about a P38 - I mean, this car seems perfect in every other way, yet that one little fault could cost £1,500+.

As I want to do a trip to Morocco next year, perhaps something simpler like a 300Tdi Discovery is a better choice - a lot less to go wrong and a lot easier to fix if/when it does!

An ex military Defender and a Kalashnikov sounds like a better choice to me:eek:

if i was going on long trip like that it would definately 300 tdi or td5 with coils on back(kit only £801 hours work) no ace, new rad and wheel brgs,a for me i would fit new clutch and rebearing and fit new baulkrings to gearbox on both

I sold my P38, a few months ago, after 5 or 6 years of ownership, and bought a 300tdi Disco. It`s a lot less refined, but I sleep better nights now, with no nightmares about EAS and premonitions of doom from the other gremlins. The car I sold is still going well, but I`ve no regrets.

That's interesting to know.

The thing is, I like the idea of doing the trip in something different - everyone takes Defenders, Disco's or Landcruisers and I realise that is with good reason, but I really fancy proving how GOOD a P38 can be, rather than the usual criticism then tend to receive - but perhaps that is for good reason too and I'm just asking for trouble?

Decisions, decisions...

OK, I spoke to an injector pump specialist this morning, fortunately he is quite local, and he said that the spring behind that plate is not particularly high tension so should be OK to dismantle and replace the O-ring if thats what I wanted to do.

HOWEVER...he did also say it is unusual for that to be the leaky point on the pump, and with those pumps if one seal fails they all tend to need replacing, which would be £400 to do. It's £300 for one on eBay, and this will effectively be reconditioned so not bad value I guess.

So, why am I interested in the car still? Well, realising the pump needs sorting and how difficult it'll be to sell a car with a diesel leak, the dealer has offered it to me for £2,250 (down from £2,700) with no warranty. So it's getting tempting again...!

Hmm....!

edited for accuracy :p

sorry,couldnt resist :D

Try knocking him down further.. If you can get another 2-300 squid from him then not bad. As for using something different than the rest, that's what I do Mike.. The guys I go laning with either have Fenders or disco's.. The p38 has proved its upto it so far with me, going again this Saturday so will keep u posted on how the Rangie does.

True.. It has a few dull branch marks on it that may come out with t-cut.. But I haven't bothered, I'll run her into the ground (hopefully a couple of years) then get a newer one.

Cheers Cez! He won't go lower than that, maybe another £50 max - but he gave the previous owner £2,300 for it in part-ex (I rang the previous owner!), so he won't drop to £2k.

Have you changed the suspension settings on your for more clearance? Or made any modifications/protection?

Cheers!
