Anyone any clue for the location of a potential short when pressing the brake pedal the dash illuminates dimly and the little 5w sides come on ??

Check the stop/tail lamps for water ingress and that the correct bulbs are fitted correctly and their contacts are clean.

If the vehicle has wiring for trailer lights then check inside the socket for similar water/corrosion of connections.
 
Chaser many thanks all fixed rear off side stop lap was dim compared to others took out and stopped the short. Reseated bulb now all good thank you for the quick reply I had visions of nights with a multi meter.
