hey guys I drowned my disco last week cleaned the water out of the engine and everything was ok I thought, the few days later I drove it and it was ok for the 20 miles to town then on the way back it felt like I had a 300di it was smoking like a pig rattling and knocking and the turbo was dead more play than play in it, got a recon one and fitted it tested it in the village she sounded spot on but when I drove it along further on a 15 mile run by the time I got home it was rattling and knocking like a pig with lots of smoke again so is it a case of rocker cover off play with valves or head off and have a little look at the pump as well, the new turbo works a treat it whistles and the boost guage shows it to be working so that is good so any ideas advice including burn it new engine and sell it are welcome thanks
I forgot to add that I have checked all the cylinders for compression all ranged between 31 and 32 bar

i will change the fuel filter tomorrow and disconnect the filter breather that goes in to the rocker cover, then i cant think of any more to be done as its had a new air filter the oil filter cant be blocked or it would go bang and the oil light come on surely

since I drowned it it has had a new air filter and turbo as turbo kaput, and I drowned it by going through a bomb hole (####ing tourists made it deeper), went through it the previous Sunday then on the Tuesday and then it hydro locked in the bomb hole whipped off the rocker cover and pulled the glow glugs out and pumped the water out and she started up and ran ok without a air filter on the way home because the old filter is wet and truly dead then next morning I threw a KnN sports cone filter on it to get about and went off to work on the way back it had no power, I was getting 40kmh and a smoke screen from the exhaust on a 9% gradient and that's foot to the floor 2nd gear and she would not pull at all

Are we talking D1 or D2?
If D1 when it hydro locked could timing belt have jumped a notch or two?
Are you sure your turbo compression side pipework isn't ruptured or hose loose/come undone, losing air, hence no power and tons of smoke

no its a 300tdi so will have a look at the timing marks and reset the tappets and go through the system one more I cleaned out the intercooler pipes and inlet manifold ao I know they are clean and nice but will go around checking jublie clips and whip off rocker cover and keep you guys posted thanks for the info

If lift pump is fooked and just running on injection pump sucking fuel from tank, could injection pump have pulled in water into fuel lines while stting in the bomb hole?
ie do you have water in your fuel?

It was not that deep mate I will put some pics on and yeah im thinking it may be the pump a little bit but I doubt water got in the diesel as all around the filler was clean but I don't know bit worried to be honest about it but just eliminate step by step and all will be good

im currently pursuing the tappets as they are loud and then im going to check the timing, is there any easy way without chipping off the timing cover but I don't think its lift pump as its getting diesel and lots of it as it leaves a mobile smoke screen in its wake I mean the whole road is coated in thick black smoke behind me, not sure that would happen if its not getting diesel but I still think the injector pump is at fault somewhere as its producing 0.7 bar currently

And that 0.7 bar is deffo going in the inlet manifold?Inter cooler or pipework not blocked?

There is a inspection plate for injection pump(3 bolts-from memory)(behind aux belt tensioner-again from memory-got a TD5 now).Get engine on TDC and pin it(bell housing)-see if 10 mm drill slides in injection pump.Saves taking whole timing cover off.

Maybe your inlet valves not opening or lost top hats if tappets noisy-that much black smoke is massive over fuelling or massive air starvation-good luck mate

My mondeo smoked like that when turbo hose split and no air got to engine -fooking bonnet lock busted so couldn't tape up as a fix-blacked out all three lanes of French motorway for over 100 miles back to the port.
French were going mad ,thought car was on fire

the timing wheel on the injector pump has jumped in the fixing the 3 bolts that hold the cog have a little bit of adjustment and there is permanent marker on the cog and the fixing wheel and it is out of line and you can see the washer marks so do I have to un tension the whole engine or can I cheat and just undue the bolts and slip it back a little ??

I would be tempted to cheat,But in your case where you have "water locked" the engine, think the only choice is to have timing cover off and check camshaft alignment as well-be kicking yourself if you hit a valve.
With that little cover off the injection pump you can only check the pump and tdc on crank.you don't know what camshaft is doing.
Probably need to fully check the belt as maybe damaged from hydro expt anyway-this might be why she ran ok for some miles ,then went bad-belt might be breaking up on you and the fact it appears to have moved ,might be a sympton of the fact it is going to fail soon.
In short take timing cover off and see what is going on.

this is unreal ok all the timing set up properly using a 10mm drill bit in the injector pump pully and the timing marks are spot on underneath as well and its just running like a bluddy dog pouring smoke out worse than before so have I stretched my timing belt by any chance ? thanks guys

bio-landy.is talking sence. instead of messing about with the thing, take the timing belt cover off and see what you have done. probably belt stretched/stripped a tooth or two.as it has been hydrolocked it some moving parts stop dead others may have kept going for a fraction. so save yourself a lot more time and stress.check your timing belt.
