Series II - Spare Wheel on Bonnet... HOW?!

Am I going mad...

My new-to-me 59' Series 2 has the bonnet mount already fitted (well, certainly part of it...). I bought the rubber pads and bolts/brackets to hold the wheel on.

Cannot see how it's supposed to actually be secure. While comparing mine to those on google maps, I can see the little wheel nut hole prong is missing - can someone work out if I am missing other components, or am just being a massive spanner here?

Drill a small hole in the end of both bolts, then fit an r clip to stop the bolts being removed with the bonnet closed.
 
My 2a had an additional steel ring that went on top of the wheel rim with just one hole for the locking post, clamps then held the lot down.
When young and foolish used to go rabbiting/fox shooting at night sat in spare with just a sack for comfort. On one one occasion while chasing a fox across a field with my mate at the wheel we found a hole at 25ish mph and bounced.
I was thrown well up in the air and came down on the wing, only just managed to hang on because of the wing mirror stalk. Went back to look at hole which was only about two foot across and 6" deep and in the bottom was a flat rabbit.
