Is there a difference between a series petrol and deisel clutch please as i am putting a 200 tdi into a series and some advice says use series clutch, others say disco clutch, thanks,Mark:confused:

I always thought that, as a general rule, the clutch had to match the flywheel, and the clutchplate had to match the gearbox input splines - ie 200TDi clutch with a series clutchplate.

I thought entire clutch to match gearbox, after all the clutch realese system is part of the gearbox and works on the clutch cover.
I'm sure a Ser II clutch release mechanism won't operate a Ser III clutch.

I concur, use the clutch for the box, another thing to look for is the pilot bearing in the flywheell its a phozy bronze bush, make sure the one you use fits the input shaft on the 'box.

If yu start drilling the flywheel, you should get the complete flywheel re-balanced - it is a critical mass (sic) and must be balanced correctly, or it will shake the engine to pieces.

with the pilot bearing, make sure the hole is the same size as the gearbox spigot.

I've done this conversion myself. I used a disco 200tdi clutch cover and spigot bearing with a series III clutch plate and clutch release bearing. The Disco clutch plate will not fit because the splines do not match the series gearbox input shaft. I used the Disco clutch cover because it is designed to cope with the torque of the Tdi and it is compatible with the series clutch release mechanism. Series III 2 1/4 petrol and diesel clutch components have the same part numbers. I think on the II/IIA Land-Rovers there was a difference between clutches on petrols and diesels. I have a feeling that a 9" clutch was used on the petrols and a 9.5 " clutch on the diesels.

Pretty sure the so called HD clutch for a TDI is just a diesel clutch plate from a series anyway Me thought might be wrong. Wasn't the difference 9 inch or 10 inch clutch plate/cover?
