Hi
I'm new to this forum and desperately need some advice  I've just picked up a Range Rover HSE Sport on an 06 plate, 52k miles and recently serviced.

On the way home it started making a screeching noise from the rear wheel, driver side - REALLY loud, especially as I pulled away. If I hit the brake it stopped immediately, but as soon as I accelerated again the noise came back. It's such a shrill noise people in the street were turning to look.

Got home, went back out in it half hour later - no noise to start with, then ten minutes into the journey it started again, so it doesn't seem to do it when 'cold'. Like before, touching the brakes stopped the noise.

What could it be? Just spent good money on this car!

Thanks

Did you happen to look to see if a cat was stuck back there?

hi , it would be ideal if you tell us whereabouts your based as someone could have a quick look at it and listen to it , anyway 3 possibilites could be 1)wheel bearing .. 2) worn brake pad ... 3) warped disc ... any of these 3 are easy to rectify and cheap to do also theres a spring clip type of thing on the calipers wich hold the pads this could have moved and be rubbing on the disc ,,, if i was u i would run it in to any national tyres open on a sun morning and give u an opion after putting it on the ramp and inspecting ,,worth a try then u can get rectified by a proper rangie mechanic hope its not too nasty cheers mozz

Is the wheel itself warm to the touch? As this would indicate the brakes may be binding, also any vibration felt through the brake pedal under light braking ?

Cheers all.

I'm based in Upminster, Essex. Braking is smooth, no vibration or juddering. Did wonder if there was a stone or dust trapped somewhere but not sure why it would get worse as it got warmer?

Good call on the Sunday morning tyre places to check it out. Have also been recommended LJK Landrover in Hainault - anyone heard of them?

I had a similar issue on another car, identical symptoms, turned out to be lack of copper grease on the back of the brake pads....... Maybe somebody changed the pads and did not use copper grease, or put enough on if they did.

Just a thought before you go down expensive routes.
:)

its not normal to cover back of pad with copper grease

I've always copper greased the back of pads but now that you question it I'm not sure why. Maybe it goes back to when you used to get anti-squeal shims with the pads. I have vague memories of getting a small pack of grease in the box with the pads and shims.

I'm assuming an 06 Sport has the automatic parking brake. It could be sticking on as you pull away. I owned a Disco 3 that did it all the time and was eventually sorted under warranty. That was a 54 plate so would think they had sorted it by 06. But its a Landrover so you never know!!
