Evening all,
I'm getting conflicting advice about how difficult it is to remove the rear salisbury diff. Some people tell me it needs a special "spreader" tool and that setting it all up again is a real pain... but on the other hand I've had others tell me it takes a bit of "jiggling/prying" but it will come out and you can then rebuild/replace bearings etc and re-install without too much fuss.
The reason I need to is that the pinion bearing is making one hell of a racket... there is no play but it's definatly the source!
So.. I'm pretty spanner friendly... can this be done or am I opening up a world of difficulties!
cheers,
J

only use timken bearings, as with those shimming should stay the same ,mark both caps so you know which side and which way round they go ,diff carrier should prise out fairly easily if tight put a bottle jack under botton of diff housing and put some wieght on housing ensure outer races are kept to the right side if refittting them ,pinion bearings will tap out with punch but use a suitable tool not punch to refit ,inner pinion bearing will have 1 or 2 shims behind it ,you reset bearing preload by tightening pinion nut (will need a tool made to hold flange 3 or 4ft at least)until all end float has gone and just enough to make pinion turn with stiff but smooth load when flange turned by hand ,careful once endfloat has gone you dont need much on the bar to go too far

:D Not a betting man..

James - Thanks.. sounds from what you have written that it's not beyond my scope.,, So once I've got my other landy back on the road I'll have a crack at it.. whats the worst that can happen.. lol

thanks for the link.. perfect. Although it has raised again the question about if you need/dont need the "spreader" tool to get the diff out...

Hi ive got a Salsbury diff that's out of the vehicle already I've been told it needs re-conditioning as it's not 'right' it didn't make any noise but the oil in it had gone metallically how much does it cost to have them done?

Cheers

Mandy
