Hi all, I decided to brave the cold and fit my newly aquired bull bar today and opened a can of worms in the process.

To start with, I removed the apron and end caps from the bumper, to allow me to mount the bar. This is what I found under the plastics...

Obviously some panels are going to have to be replaced, but is rust in these areas an MOT fail? Bearing in mind the inner wing has gone completely at the front...

Sell it on ebay as the latest lightweight model;)
Easy repair when the weather gets better, check out the boot floor and sills, make a list then cancel this years holidays, learn to weld.

yes there is front mounts body-chassis
Thanks, so this is where the tears start! Obviously looking at new inner wing panel, headlight unit and battery tray. Does the YRM metal headlight unit include the mounting point? The angle is wrong in the pic and you can probably tell i haven't much experience in this area..

Off to get some welding quotes, how many hours work would you expect it to be to replace these panels?

Thanks for the link, i'll see what quotes i get for the urgent MOT related work, then look into doing the rest myself. The Green Hornet/Mr Noisey thread has inspired me to do a full restoration job when time and finances allow!

Does anyone know if the YRM metal complete headlight unit includes the chassis mounting point or if this is a seperate piece?

Thanks Lazydog!

As i mentioned at the start of the thread, i started out with the intention of fitting my new bull bar - however the mounts seem completely wrong.

Am i missing a bracket to attach the bottom of the bars to the bumper mounts, or is this bull bar for a completely different model?!

mine failed first mot after i bought it on rusty sills..

bought a mig, easy on repair panels had it back to garage 5 days later for a pass..

2nd year failed on boot floor, rear wheel arches, inner and outer, 3 body mounts on inner sills..

bought some tin, made the panels, 30 hours welding and fabricating, had it back for the pass 6 days after it failed..

i work tue to friday on day job, dj fri and sat nights and 4 til 9 sundays.. mondays r my only full day off.. i have no garage,

anythin is possible, they are so easy to fix...

it should curve upwards in order to fit onto the side of the chassis leg using the same bolts that are holding the bumper on. If it doesn't do that. It'd not the right one or some one had modified it to fit something else..

I'm impressed! I'm out for work from 7am till 7pm and don't have a garage or even a drive so i'm not far off you ;)

Looks like it's time to learn to weld!

PM'd you... sorry if I sold you something which wasn't what I thought it was... happy to collect it back and refund you!

ok, I have tried the search function and the tyre fitting guide so please don't throw things at me...

Whilst working out what to do with the rust, my new (well, 2nd hand) wheels and tyres arrived. 235/85/16 insa turbos on steel wheels. I'm ready to do the camel cut etc etc, but someone asked me if they were the right offest, which had me stumped.

Theres nothing stamped on the metal, and they came off a defender 90. Should they be the same offset?
