Hi,

I had a coolant hose split before which resulted in the coolant leaking out quite fast.

I thought I would make it home (about 12 miles, 8 of which is motorway) so filled the tank up and set on my way.

Got home fine, although the engine was smelling very very hot and there was no coolant left whatsoever. The electric fan was also running after I switched the engine off.

I Will get the hose fixed before I drive it again but am I likely to have caused any damage by running it with little/no coolant? The engine was running fine the whole way back and the temperature gauge was actually reading normal.

It's a Discovery 2 TD5.

So it seems u were lucky enough to not burn the head gasket......fill it up go for a drive and see what happens, if it's damaged u can't harm it more and if not , taking into acount that u;ll have coolant then nothing bad will happen.

If you get away without having blown the headgasket and/or cracked the head don't forget to buy a lottery ticket.:eek::eek:

Just cos the temp gauge didn't rise it doesn't mean it wasn't overheating. If there's no coolant in the engine how is the coolant sensor gonna know what the temperature is?

Keep a VERY close eye on coolant levels AND coolant hose pressures aswell as temp etc over the next couple of weeks.

also keep an eye on the inside of the o / s / front wheel arch for coolant spraying all over the chassis there, from the overflow pipe and or the header tank cap as mine is, just running it round locally and topping up the coolant daily for now till i can get it done ( hols in 5 weeks time ) so mite have to go in my mates disco 1 :(
