rotten boot floor

before anyone says do a search i know this subject has been covered to death but i cant find anyone that wanted to do it the way im going to do it . being the tightarse that i am and being on i tight budget ( child number 4 on the way in 3 months ) i cant really afford to buy a genuine boot floor and the supports for it so im thinking about cutting the old floor and supports outs and welding in some 2 x 2 box section just under the body and then pop riveting a sheet of alluminium chequer plate over the top of it .
does anyone know of any disadvantages to doing it this way as i really cant afford the proper bits for a while yet and my floor has gone much worse in the last 4 weeks since i last checked it ? thanks guys

Could be done i spose ................. but why use 2x2 box section???

Smaller angle section will do the job alright for most of the supports or if you want to go heavier duty 2x1 box for the 2 main supports

I think that the chequerplate will probably cost just as much as a replacement floor section TBH (i paid £50 from Paddocks)

Probably be lots of welding required in the areas surrounding the new panel too

i bet a replacement floor panel is cheaper than the same sized sheet of ali plate

oh and yer might get away with tarting up the supports and using a sheet of marine ply instead of the steel/ali plate if yer really on a tight budgie

sheet of marine grade18mm plys coming in at £40+ these days
id get boot panel no do it properly case yer ever want to sell it

thanks for the quick replies and its got me thinking now cos i didnt realise that the alloy plate would be that expensive , would marine ply do the job and how thick would it need to be and would it be safe enough cos i carry 2 of my kids in there regularly ?

Do it properly then mate ........... makes sense if your carrying the kiddies back there

Replaced the boot floor in my 1st Disco and it came to about £100 +vat for all the bits

Boot floor (LRD143) £48 +vat
Front floor crossmember (ALR8519) £19.50 +vat
Rear floor crossmember (ASR1187) £14.50 +vat
Middle floor crossmember (ALR8520) £23.50 +vat
£105.95 +vat .............. FREE delivery too

i think the alloy plate and even the marine ply have been priced out of my budget now so i might see wot the fitters in work can " lend " me ( i work for a bus company and they got loads of aluminium and steel panels in the workshop ) .
its has made me quite angry tho that a big car manufacturer like land rover can get away with making a car that can rot away to next to nothing in about 10 - 15 years but perhaps thats cos im used to peugeots with their gaslvanised bodies that never rusted on me . but saying that i wouldnt give my disco up now cos she is starting to grow on me

i have thought about that but she need s some welding on the side panel of the floor that runs upto the wheel arch so im thinking it could get expensive especially as im paying someone else to do it ( i could do it myself but i work 6 days a week and by the time i buy myself a tidy welder and all the equipment its running into 100's of pounds )

Where in the country are ya mate?

I bought a sheet of 2mm steel chequer plate a few months ago that cost 70 quid so I'd expect ali to be a lot more than that. Unless you can scrounge some stuf from somewhere it really is cheaper and much easier to buy the purpose made parts

don't mean to hyjack the thread, but does anyone know how to get the carpet up in the boot. I have noticed that its soaking wet under mine, and can't be helping the rusting. Its stuck down like **** to a blanket!!!

Its TD5 ES. Sorry

ive got half an sheet 48"x48" plate ali/steel alloy if yer wants it

I believe you have to take the plastic trim panels off first.

Don't forget that when this repair has been done, at some stage it will need to pass an MOT.

If it's not done satisfactorily, you'll have to do it again !!!

Boot floor isn't n MOT testable item. and the seatbelt mountings Pass thru the floor but are not secured to it and therefore also not testable where they pass thru the floor.

Here's a link to a step by step guide to replacing the boot floor and supports. Where the guy has Pop riveted the floor panel in place. Boot Floor Replacement

I can't weld to save me life but I repaired the bootfloor on the wife's Disco and it has passed an MOT.

I can weld, just aint gorra welder

ya didnt search very well, i ave said more than once i just used a flat sheet of 1.6mm steel, this passed 2mot's no problem :d
