hi im going on a road trip in august through france, through the alps to milan, back down to st tropaz, then back up to paris then home, over a 8 day holiday, what would you suggest taking incase of the worst, never took landy outa the country, im planning on taking (spares) starter, alternator, fuel filters x2, battery fully charged, snow chains, fuses, relays, toolbox, 5 gallons water, deisel, 3 spare wheels, ?? what genuinely fails, im also doing cam belt kit first, and all oils etc ;) 2000 mile round trip if helps

i'd trust her to do the job and just take ,uj's, wheel bearings, belts ,brake pads if your driving mountain tracks, tools, ropes and sort some european recovery out, other than water all yer fluids are cheaper abroad .

we will be doing offroading along the way of course ;) but it will mainly be road driving, nothing major offroad, but if we see something good we will be doing it lol, but are wheel bearings really that bad, what if i replace them all and take couple or something, do they really break alot,

uj's= universal joints for yer prop shafts, and wheel bearings are worth doing before as they're cheep and easy to do then just carry a spare set just in case, i know if i was doing an 8 day trip around the uk i wouldn't want to carry the equivalent of a spare disco around and don't, take what's cheap and easy to fix yourself and have faith in her cos if she hasn't let you down thus far and has been well cared for chances are you won't need half of it .
just carry ,bearings, belts, brake pads, uj's, and gaffer tape and bulbs ,jubilee clips and such and make sure you have some recovery gear if you get stuck mate.

Gotta love landys, even though she has never really let me down and Ive been on quite a few long journeys in her I would share about the same amount of confidence in mine if I were to drive to france (I always make sure I take my phone with me even on short journeys - just in case she decided to play up!) These thoughts would never even cross my mind if I was to jump in one of my reliable sensible german cars that never break down, We have to ask ourselves sometimes why we even own a Land Rover in the 1st place and then I remember :- its because we all must be mental:D

Just tow a spare disco behind you and you will have all the spares you should need.:D

UPDATE: I have just recieved a phone call from a gentleman who I sold one of my ever so reliable german cars (51 Golf GT TDI 130) to, He has informed me that the car I sold him 8 days ago is now sitting in the garage getting a new head gasket fitted! there was absolutely no sign of this when me and my friend the local VW mechanic carried out a full service a week before sale so it just goes to show any car can develop problems without any real warning so its not just limited to Landys.

I know I could have just told him to **** off but when he called me as a sign of good will I have offered to pay half of the garage bill up to a maximum of £400 (me £200) as I wouldnt like my reputation to be tarnished in the future.

F**KING CARS!!!!!

This is a joke, right?

You're not going to the bowels of deepest Africa you, it's just France, La Belle France.

If your vehicle is well maintained you shouldn't need any of that lot.

Think about it, in the last 2000 miles what has broken down on your Disco? I'm not talking about servicing or preventative maintenance - actually stuff that has broken?

It makes sense to do the cambelt and check the vehicle over thoroughly before you leave, replacing anything that appears worn, grease all the u/j's and wheel bearings, change all fluids ie oils and coolant.

But assuming that is done, just set off with European cover and enjoy yourself. When off-roading far from home always be extra-careful of breaking something.

A couple of years ago I took my TDi 300 auto Daisy III to Morocco - a round trip of 8000kms - and took loads of spares with me. How many did I use? 1 fuel filter !!!!!!

If you're not careful you will carry so many spares that the weight of them will cause trouble off-roading and definitely consume more fuel.

Remember that this is an adventure, you can't manage out absolutely every possible problem. BTW don't forget to get yourself a european medical card - used to be called an E111, just in case anyone needs any medical assistance.

My advice is to make sure your vehicle is in tip-top order before you leave and then go and enjoy yourself.

If you need any advice on where to go, pm me.

Have fun.
Dave

got to agree with mr biglad ,i just service (including pads and anything that needs attention)a week or so before i go , never take anything .anything daft like a uj should have been done before you go ,anything more serious isnt going to get done at the side of the road

Agree 100%. Do a thorough good service before you leave. Take a reasonable tool kit. Get European breakdown cover just in case, and then loads of sun cream and have fun. All the parts you mention are easily available in all the countries you are visiting and 90% you won't need any of them

I hope you are travelling over the Millau Viaduct. It's even better in a Disco you get a great view.

I take my 95 Disco over to France without any spares at all, I have RAC cover and there are garages there!

As has been said the only spares you will need will be water, amalgamating tape rad weld,, a few spare bits of hose (I replaced mine and kept the old ones for spares), a few jubilees clips, fuses, bulbs, maybe a set of brake pads as off roading can get grit into them and wear them quick. I personally carry some screen wash, power steering fluid and a bit of oil incase it gets low and a fuel filter.

UJ's are awkard enough in a garage let alone on the side of the road plus if one goes just diff lock it and drive 2wd...

Anything over that and its not really a road side repair...

kl thanks alot for advice, ill take all that in and im gona just replace alot of what people said just before i go just to be safe and at the end of it the car will be better :) im gona take alot less then i was lol, just never drove abroad that far and dont wana get stuck, but i trust the old girl as weve just built her from the ground up, so got 3 months in england for any teething problems before we set off :)
