my problem is i cant get the top bolt off the starter motor i got the bottom one off no problem but the top one is so hard to get at and when i do get at it, it just wont budge.

just want to know if anyone has ever replaced there starter motor on range rover p38 how did you do it and what tools did you use, any help would be great thanks.

Thought it was a cap head allen screw,,,where does the nut come into the equasion ?? a cap screw has a round head with a hexagon female recess. Am I missing something here ????

First thing is to see if you can post a photo of the top fixing setup. Maybe someone has changed the cap screw for a hex head bolt....I dunno, my crystal ball needs a clean at the moment.

I can feel for you. I went through a similar scenario last week with my '99 P38. Bottom bolt was piece of cake but the top one was a nightmare. Despite excellent coaching from Irishrover I was unable to get enough purchase on the top bolt. I eventually ended up taking the heat shield of the manifold and disconnected the manifold from the head. This gave me enough room to get in with the hex socket with a UJ and a bunch of extensions. Still couldn't move it with my 1/2" drive ratchet and needed my 24" master bar in the end.
This approach might be worth trying as the hex bolt is deep enough and might only be rounded at the edges. A good cleaning will help the socket get in more. Last resort is to remove the manifold altogether and then weld a hex socket onto the bolt. That should stop it from rounding...

you can get a socket that will eat in to the bolt and that will do the job. i think the sockets are used to get locking wheel nuts off if you have lost the key. or you can weld a socket over the nut if theres space to do that. wot ever you do take you time with it

good lad jamie, you put things into perspective, but it is my missus your talking about:hysterically_laughi
:):)sorry mate any chance of a pair of nickers in the post:eek: and just to show your not telling porkeys could we have a pitcher of her bent over the range rover. she could put a few fingers in just to be nice if she wants but thats up to you guys..dont worry ill send one back but ill tell you now mines built for comfort not speed. mine dont mess around with a finger she likes the hole hand ....we could swap for a bit if you like:scratching_chin::hysterically_laughi
